| #1obiwaynekenobiAug 30, 2009 7:49:43 | I've never played RPGA before; it's only been home games with a small group of friends. However, I found a game store that has regular LFR events about 40 minutes from me, and I'm thinking of seeing what RPGA has to offer me. I have some kind of stupid "n00b" questions first, though, to get a better handle on how it works. I've downloaded the Living FR character creation guide and I'm reading through it, but haven't read the entire thing just yet. Anyways, on with the questions: 1) When I first create my character, I choose a region that he hails from. Does this have to be the same region as where my real-life geographic region is? I'm in Florida, so my region is Aglarond; does my character (and all subsequent characters) have to be from Aglarond, or do I have free reign to choose another region? 2) I'm confused as to how the regional modules work (I think that's what the prefixes for adventures mean, right? like DALE is Dalelands, AGLA is Aglarond, etc). Can I only play in certain modules? If my character is from Aglarond and I can play in a Dalelands module, then it's assumed my character's traveled to the Dales in search of adventure, right? Are there any in-game restrictions regarding traveling or is it (and I hate to use this term, so please forgive me) MMO-like in that I just "spawn" in that area? In fact, I really don't understand the whole "regional module" thing - there seems to be "core" modules that can be played in any region, and region-specific modules. What's the difference? 3) I start at 1st level, per normal rules, so I can only play in modules for 1st level characters, right (well, 1st level in the range - I kinda/sorta understand the "range" concept but I'm a little worried that it's not balanced; it works, though, so I must be missing something). How frequent are 1st level modules appearing? I ask because I checked the store's schedule for September and there are only higher level modules throughout the month I hope everyone forgives a silly newbie with his silly questions |

You can play in any adventure that your character fits into the level range of (so if you are a 1st level character, you can only play in 1-4 adventures or adventures designed for 1st-level characters). There are a few level 1-4 adventures released each quarter. As for what regions you can play in, you can play any adventure in any region. The regions with codes (Dalelands, etc) are the regions that have their own distinct flavor and storylines, where Core adventures take place in other regions and tend to have connecting themes for at most one major quest (three adventures). As for travel, the time between adventures is undefined, so there is plenty of time between adventures to take a ship, walk, or otherwise travel to your next adventure; you don't need to be "spawning" there unless you have long-range teleport rituals and want to do it that way. |

Correct that you need to play adventures which accomodate 1st-level characters. The "level limits" for LFR adventures are hard limits; you *cannot* play in an adventure for levels 4-7 without a character who's reached that level range (and, as you've probably realized, you can't create a character at any other level than 1st). As far as your concern about balance...the vast majority of the modules for 1st level PCs are written for levels 1-4. All such modules include two "difficulty settings"...a "low" setting (more appropriate for lower-level PCs within the range), and a "high" setting (more appopriate for higher-level PCs). Note that those aren't hard-and-fast, just suggestions, and many of the early 1-4 modules were considered to be easy enough that a party of all 1st-level PCs could successfully play a 1-4 on "high" without difficulty. There will be several new adventures for levels 1-4 coming out every quarter, in addition to the roughly 2 dozen adventures for levels 1-4 which are already out there. And, there's a new "mini-campaign arc", which premiered at GenCon, consisting of 6 two-round adventures (coming out one per month), all of which will be for levels 1-4. As John has already noted, there are no restrictions whatsoever on which region's modules you can play. Everything's open for you. I'd suggest talking to whoever's running LFR games at your store, and ask them about running some low-level stuff.
No worries...we were all newbies once! |
