Ok, I just ran my first RPGA (Home) game yesterday and everyone really seemed to like it.

Today, I am trying to report the event. But 2 (out of 4) of my players have invalid RPGA numbers. One player showed up and didn't have a RPGA card, so I gave him one and I have the card with his information on it. The other showed up with his own card.

I can't enter either one when reporting the event. What should I do?

I entered the players I could and saved the event.

----------

A few questions about GP and XP gains and losses.

If a player buys a Dagger (1gp), and finds 75gp later, is the GP gain 74gp or 75gp? (I'm sure it's 74, but I just want to make sure)

XP is just the XP gained from this adventure, and not the total XP of the character, correct?

----------

Thanks.

Odds are pretty good that the user with the "invalid" number has an old RPGA number that has to be converted to the new DCI/RPGA number.

There's details in the RPGA FAQ at the top of this forum, but here's the short version:

Older RPGA numbers have all been incremented by 100,000,000. So, if the player's old number was 11111 - his "new" number is 100011111. If the old RPGA number was never used - he'll need to get a DCI number instead.

I tried adding the additional numbers in front of the RPGA number they gave me, but it is still invalid.

How can I get them new DCI numbers?

New DCI numbers can be obtained in several ways. Easiest and quickest is to check with a local game store that runs Magic events to see if they can give a couple of their spare DCI cards.

You can also request a batch be mailed to your address from dci@wizards.com.

On your GP & XP questions:
GP tracks GP change, so yes, 74 would be the amount entered.

XP is just the XP gain from the current module, not the total PC XP.

Is there no way to register players online?

Unfortunately at this time there is no alternative sign-up method to the long-standing one of grabbing a physical card and mailing it in.

Although...

Maybe our resident VCL can poke Tulach with a stick until the idea, well, sticks. (ok, that sounded better before I said it)

Correct. The "GP gain" should be the net gain. If a PC spends enough money, this can wind up being a negative number.

XP is just the XP gained from this adventure, and not the total XP of the character, correct?

Correct.

That would be awesome (and more cost effective, I would imagine).

I just got off the phone with one of my players and he loved the game. I think, our schedules permitting, we are going to try to turn our normal weekly game into a RPGA Home game. If not, at least every 2-3 weeks.

Everyone on this board has been very, very helpful. Thank you.

Allowing players to join the RPGA online led to a large number of people joining but never using their memberships. At least at one point, the intervention of real people was required in the membership sign-up process (if only to send out a welcome letter) and this was considered not to be cost-effective.

If you email dci@wizards.com they will (albeit sometimes with a delay of a few weeks) send you a batch of blank DCI membership cards (you should ask for DCI ones as they are the easiest to use for signing people up). As mentioned upthread, finding a friendly local store which runs Magic or DDM is the easiest way to get cards, as they tend to have a far larger stock of them because of the way the DCI supports stores.

It's something that gets brought up from time to time.

The concern on WotC's part is that people will sign up for a DCI number "just because" - and then never use it, leading to database bloat. This is due in part to the fact that this is the very thing that happened when the system did allow for online registrations in the past.

I'll put it in my community report for this month, but in truth, now that we're part of the DCI database we'd likely be better off posting in the DCI forums - probably in the Wizards Play Network subsection.

Well, what if instead of allowing anyone to sign up, they only allow judges or DM to sign people up. Judges and DM's have obviously put some time investment into DCI/RPGA, and they would most likely only sign people up how have expressed interest to them about joining.

It would be pretty much the same thing it is now, but give a tool to the Judge/DM to quickly register people (saving stamps, envelopes, and time).

Thing is for me right now is, I have an event I can't finish reporting until I can get these 2 players joined. If I could input their information online, when I report the event, then I can save days or weeks.

Just a thought.

New Question! (Yay, I know! Right?)

I just downloaded an adventure for this upcoming weekend. One has a Potion of Healing found in mid-game.

It isn't in one of the bundle options, other than the Potion and Gold option that is always there.

How should I handle it? Does every one get one? Thanks.

Items found mid-adventure are treated at the DM's discretion. For instance, if a player finds a Flaming Longsword on the human knight but one of the bundle options is "Flaming Weapon (found on Encounter X)", I would hold the item to be a flaming longsword until the end of the adventure and let them choose a new item type if they choose to keep it as their bundle reward; otherwise it becomes part of the module gold as stated in the last section of the adventure.

In the case of a potion of healing... if the players take the time to search and find it, I'd let them keep one for use during the same adventure.

Do what feels right and keeps in the intent of the campaign standards! Keep the party involved and crank the fun up

Well a potion is technically a magic item. If my pc's already have a magic item, how does this effect them?

Should I let the one pc that picks up the healing potion keep it if it is unused as the end of the mod?

I know in the group I am running for, healing potions are going to be very valuable.

In the case of LFR adventures, potions taken as bundles do not count as "found items" for the found item slots in regards to the 1 found item slot per character level rule.

If a player finds it mid-adventure and does not use it, but chooses a different bundle at the end, that player loses the potion.

If healing is an issue, suggest that they consider multi-classing some warlord, bard, cleric powers?

I think I am confused my the CCG a little bit.

It says that you can have 1 found / magic item per level. But when time comes, you can't get sell yours and pick a new one in the same level.

For example: All my PC's took a magic weapon in the first adventure they played. This weekend, we are having another adventure. They can't sell they magic weapon they have to choose another bundle with magic armor. But they could choose the Potion or Gold bundle, right?

They can sell the item. However, the slot for 1st level is filled. They do not gain another free pick until 2nd level. The 1st level slot will be forever filled. They can choose potion and more gold or any other non-magic item picks (ritual scroll).

Once they reach 2nd level, they can again fill that item slot with a free pick.

Think of your "Found Item Slots" as "get a magic item free!" coupons.

You get one such coupon per level.

When you spend it, you get a magic item. If you sell the magic item, you don't get the coupon back - you just get 1/5 the cost of the item.

I think I am getting even more confused. Sorry.

Characters can only get magic items by finding them (as in bundles), buying them, or creating them right?

With the "Free Magic Item" thing, that reffers to magic items found in the adventure, right?

Is there a limit to the number of magic items a character to own at once?

There is no limit to the number of magic items a character can own.

However there is a limit to the number of permanent magic items a character can ever have found, i.e. got for free from a bundle at the end of an adventure. That limit is equal to the character's level. Once you have 'found' as many magic items as you have levels, you will not/can not find any more until you gain another level. You can never, unless specifically told you can, regain a found magic item slot. IIRC there's a sheet at the back of the CCG with thirty slots. If there isn't, it's worth making one, at least to help to visualise this.

Note that you can find items of any level, use items of up to and including your level + 4, but only buy or create items of your level or lower.

Also note that consumable magic items like potions, and ritual scrolls and books do not take up found magic item slots (but are subject to the 'only buy of your level or lower' restriction.)

You have the right of it.

You can find items in an adventure (Found Items - these may be above your level) or you can buy (with your gold - items of your level or lower), or you may create items (also using your gold, with the proper rituals - of your level or lower).

You can own unlimited items, but (assuming LFR will run through all 30 levels of play) you will only be able to take 30 Found Items.

You may, however, buy/create as many items as your budget allows.

Thanks, that does clear up a lot. I appreciate it.

Just to be sure, and I know it sounds like I am repeating myself (sorry), the bundle at the end of the adventure. A player whom has already found as many magic items as they are alloted for their level can still choose a bundle, so long as it doesn't contain a magic item. Is this correct?

Correct.

To state it in more detail - at the end of a module every character will choose a bundle of some sort.

Bundles can (generally) be divided into thr following groups:

1) Found Item bundles - these contain permanent magic items (weapons, armor, implements, neck/hand/head/other slot items). These use a Found Item Slot for that character. These are chosen by taking a specific "lettered" bundle (Bundle "A", Bundle "B", etc)

2) Ritual bundles - These contain a ritural scroll or ritual book. These do not use a Found Item Slot. These are chosen by taking a specific "lettered" bundle (Bundle "A", Bundle "B", etc)

3) Potion/consumable bundles - Healing potions or other consumable magic items do not use a slot, and typically offer the option of also taking a sliver more gold than the above slot types. There are no bundle "letters" for this choice.

4) "More Gold" bundles - these contain no items at all, so the character gets a bigger share of raw gold. This does not use a Found Item Slot. There are no bundle "letters" for this choice.

Hope that helps.

You know what would be cool, a RPGA Wiki! Why, you ask? Cuase I have more questions.

-----

I just noticed in the Rewards Summary of the modules I printed out, it states that if a player chooses a bundle that gives them more gold (like the Potion Plus Gold or More Gold options), add that to the gold all characters receive.

Does that stack? Example: Players 1 and 2 both choose More Gold. Thus a total of 100 gold (2 x 50 gold) is added to all players gold totals for the adventure.

-----

In the LFR, there is no Regions/Character Backgrounds that are off limits, are there?

No: when that was written the author thought that everyone would read this as follows: add (that gold) to (the gold all characters receive) ... [when determining how much gold the individual player choosing more gold receives]. In other words add that gold [50gp] to the gold all characters receive [75gp] [so that the player choosing more gold gets 125gp]. If you read (the gold all character receive) as being a signifier for the figure which everyone gets (75gp max for 1-4 low tier etc) then the sentence makes more sense - though it could do with being re-worded! I hope my explanation hasn't been too confusing!

-----

In the LFR, there is no Regions/Character Backgrounds that are off limits, are there?

Every LFR character must, at character creation, choose one, and only one, regional background from the Forgotten Realms Players' Guide. So there is no FR background (from the book) which is off-limits; but PH2 and Scales of War backgrounds are not available.

You get your XP before you are offered a bundle. That means you level before you have a choice.

So, if I start a module at level 1, and I hit level 2 at the end, I have a shiny new 2nd Found Item slot that *can* be filled (immediately) if I so desire.

(If I haven't used my level 1 slot yet (that I got on creation) then I have TWO total slots now. Whee!)
