My hope for these threads is to give the admins (regional, global, and RPGA) a place they can check in and see what the "issues of the month" are. As such, I'd hope to keep discussion and debate in *this* thread to a minimum.

Hopefully, the questions that land here will be those that have already seen a little debate and discussion, but remain unresolved.

I don't guarantee these threads will generate any immediate answers, but hopefully, at the very least, they can be used to give a quick pointer to where the existing "hot" issues are.

That said, feel free to start posting current ambiguities or concerns you have in the current RPGA rules at hand.

Now that it's November, I'm curious if there is any update on the reward card mailing? Is it on time? Have the # of cards been successfully harvested from the database? Will the cards earned/points in our Rewards tracker drop to reflect the ones being mailed? And last, but certainly not least, can we expect an update to the rewards portion of the RPGA site? Having the card lists reflect the current and future LFR sets would be nice and changing the info page would prevent some confusion in new players.

All of these questions are beyond the scope of the LFR staff, but I will make sure to bump it up the ladder to Chris Tulach. If I get an answer from him, I will post it here.

As LFR continues to grow in popularity, are there any plans to add additional writers to the pool so that more adventures may be written?

Are there any plans to continue releasing lower-level adventures as we move into higher tiers of progression? ie: release a few new level 1-4 adventures although the campaign has graduated to 4-7, and so on

You can contact a regional Writing Director or Global Admin about writing an LFR adventure at most anytime; there is not a fixed list which never changes or grows.

Yes, more lower level adventures will be released in 2009. I am not authorized to release any specific schedule nor do I know what everyone is doing anyway, but I know the general trend.

There is a firm adventure schedule that is set by WotC--an increase or decrease in interested writers will not change that schedule. Anyone interested in writing an adventure for a region can contact that region's PoC or Writing Director. Each Global Admin is also responsible for a set of Core adventures each year. At some point on will put out a general call for writers on these boards, where interested writers will be asked to provide a cover letter/resume, and then a writing sample, so that we can establish a pool of writers for future writing work.

Are there any plans to continue releasing lower-level adventures as we move into higher tiers of progression? ie: release a few new level 1-4 adventures although the campaign has graduated to 4-7, and so on

Yes. The first batch of adventures of regional and Core adventures (Q3 2008) were all 1-4. The second batch (Q4 2008) that are currently being released will all be 4-7. The third batch (Q1 2009) will all be 7-10. Thereafter, adventures released will cover all of the level bands: some will be 1-4, and others will cover the other bands where PCs are currently leveled in the campaign.

Note that other types of adventures released (adaptables, specials, etc.) may vary in level from quarter to quarter, as deemed appropriate and necessary by WotC.

Two of my players that have legal 10-digit RPGA numbers have told me that they aren't able to access their accounts online. When attempting to log on, both get the message "Unable to reset password"

How can I get those players to access their information and allow them to sign up for rewards?

Greetings all,

Playing at a convention this past weekend, there was lots of discussion about rules. Some players are still holding out for "official" rules clarification. My take is that the Q&A answers posted on the website are about as official as it's going to get. Especially with the whole "DM Fiat" mindset of 4e.

So, bascially, is Customer Service (even though they give conflicting answers) and the D&D Q&A as official as rules clarifications are going to get for purposes of the LFR campaign?

Thanks in advance!

The official rules sources are the books, and the Errata/Updates.

Customer Service, Q&A, Sage, etc articles are available as supporting documents, but are not considered official. A GM/Player is suggested to take them under advisement, but they aren't official/final rulings.

So, we are two weeks into November. Should we be expecting Reward Cards to start being mailed out in the next week or two? If yes, will the cutoff for the Spring Mailing remain December 31 and what dates played will be included in that mailing? If the cards are not being sent out in November, are you going to hold off until the end of December and do all three mailings at once?

Also, since everything is now open access, what is the future of creation cards? After all, there are not that many viable player races left in the Monster Manual and everything else is already open for play.

Actually, another thing. There is a discussion that could use some unambiguous input from a RPGA mod. A discussion has been circling for a couple days now if it is allowable for someone to take the stats of one race, but play as if they are a different race. In the specific case in point, a player has made a character with Warforged stats but wants to be treated as an Orc. Several of us feel this si the height of ridiculousness. If a ruling on this could be made, or a Mod pushed in the direction of the thread it would be appreciated.

I checked with the powers that be on this, here is what I know so far:

We’re still in the process of finishing results entry for Gen Con Indy. It will be done soon. We have no ETA yet. However, we are not pulling D&D Rewards until after the Gen Con Indy entry is complete, so all Gen Con reporting will count towards their rewards for this cycle.

Solice is still trying to get an answer for me RE: doubling points for GenCon.

The editorial moderator (yours truly) has been skimming the thread (reading it kinda makes my head spin, and like Pieter (I think it was he who replied) I can see both sides. I've not stepped in because A) I don't make decisions (no really - my wife picks out my clothes more often than not) and B) You've all been pretty civil so far as I've seen.

I believe Pieter said that the Globals were conferring on this and they'd post when they have come to a decision.

  • Can you elaborate a bit on "Content that specifies DM adjudication in order to be used by a character?" I'm trying to get a feel for just how broad this category is. It obviously would include something like upgrading a thundering weapon to a thunderburst weapon (which AV specifically says is allowed at DM's option.) I'm wondering if it would include things like Purple Dragon Knight as well, since "affiliated" isn't a defined term in the either the game or RPGA/campaign rules, and that would require an individual DM to determine what constitutes "affiliation" with Cormyr.

  • Will the bard be permitted to do a "full" retrain of all feats, powers, and skills (but not class features, rituals, or anything else) once the book is released by way of the special retrain rule for playtest classes? The reason I ask is that the bard isn't specifically called out as a playtest class in the Ampersand article, while barbarian definitely is. I guess I'm looking for a definitive statement on what constitutes a playtest class for the purpose of the retraining rule.

  • Once and for all - is it legal for the senior GM of an event to play in his/her own event as long as they're playing with a different table GM? I'm not talking about DMPCs here, but if I'm the only Herald+ GM available and I'd like to play an event, can I sanction it, hand it off to a non-herald GM to run, and then play? Does this change based on the event type (home, retail, game day, convention)? The RPGA General Rules seems pretty clear on this subject, but it looks to be disallowing it on the basis of foreknowledge, which is no longer an issue. I've heard of people that did this and were fine, I've also heard of multiple people that had their events invalidated because of this. What's the word?

Thanks!

Under the "old" rules, it was pretty clear...and it varied by event type. In Home play, the Senior GM was specifically disallowed from being a player at an event he set up (the assumption being that he would be the event's GM), while it was legal for a Senior GM to play at his own event if it was set up as a Convention or Game Day.

It does seem like this restriction should have been removed, based on the change in RPGA's philosophy on replaying, etc. But, I don't know, for certain, if it actually has been changed.

I thought it had been changed already - I've already ordered several "Home" LFR events that I played in and had someone else judge (I have a friend who is happy to DM all the time but can't be bothered to log in or order mods - in 5+ years he has never once logged into his RPGA account).

I have a question : How is the Star Wars GM test coming along?

I haven't been informed that there is such a thing at this point. At any rate, the judge center staff isn't working on a Star Wars RPGA exam. We've got some exams dealing with Star Wars Miniatures, but nothing for Star Wars RPGA. I can't speak for what R&D or RPGA staff may be doing toward that end - I've heard nothing from anyone up the line on anything like this. If you've heard something I haven't from someone official, please let me know and I'll poke around a bit.

well,a few months back this questions were being submitted for the RPGA test and then this appeared
I wrote the RPGA test questions for star wars saga and sent them to Chris. It's in the process of reviewing according to the last information I got.

so maybe you could ask Chris? no I dunno who the chris is...lol

edit:
- a current rpga star wars herald test is currently in the making

onemroe edit I hope :
2. We want to have a Herald-level judge test set up for Star Wars Saga Edition. The only thing we need is content for the test (about 100 questions or so). If you're interested in writing questions for the test, please PM me. As soon as we get enough questions, a prospective judge can choose which test they'd like to take - D&D or Star Wars Saga.

Well, Chris is Chris Tulach, the RPGA Content Designer. It sounds like it's on his desk and he hasn't passed it on to the judge center staff yet, which could be for any one of a number of reasons. I'll drop him a line after the Thanksgiving break and see if there's anything that we can do to help get that exam online.

I'd like to reiterate the request for official comment in the LFR re-fluff thread. It's not that the discussion is not civil but that for the last several pages it has been going in circles. There is a fundamental difference on rule interpretation between the two sides. The official RPGA ruling on this, one way or the other, will make for a significant difference in how races and classes, and specifically restricted races or ones available through rewards, are handled.

I'm not sure how much longer the thread will keep going, seeing as both sides are just reiterating arguments at this point, and it would be nice to get some clarification instead of letting the question fade away unanswered.

I don't see a basis in D&D or the CCG for playing a race for your character which is not from an approved player resource book. There are, for instance, legitimate orc characters which are granted via the RPGA Player Reward creation card. I believe the PH2 will likely have orcs, or at least half orcs, for a character race. There is no provision in D&D rules for playing one race and saying the character racial mechanics will be drawn from another race. While a home DM can certainly decide to allow that, in LFR anything that would require the DM to approve (interpretation or exception) is not allowed.

Likewise for classes. While certainly various players might like to have already started a druid, they just have to wait until either a preview/playtest article on that class, or the final official publication appears. In LFR we follow standard D&D rules except where WotC R&D has explicitly approved (or directed) a variation.

Please ask the question that is under dispute here in as succinct a manner as possible, and I will do my best to answer. Understand, of course, that if it is a matter of "core rules," then the question should be asked of WotC Customer Service.

The short version of the question under discussion is:
Is it acceptable to use the stats from one race and the flavour from another? For example, could you use the stat bonuses and breath weapon of a dragonborn but play the character as a human and expect the DM and other players to treat it as a human?
#27

smerwin29

Nov 28, 2008 7:22:47
If you are using the mechanics of one race, you are that race. "Flavor" should not alter game mechanics. Character backgrounds should not alter game mechanics. Also, players are probably going to be disappointed if they "expect" much of anything from DMs or other players.

On the other hand, this is a game of imagination as much as mechanics--so DMs (and other players) should make every attempt to work with players to make their character concepts and backgrounds come alive in the world they are being asked to present to the players.

Just as an FYI, request for action for the web folks:

On the LFR Character Creation web page at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lfrx/characters there ar5e two links to the character creation guide. The one higher up on the page is fine, it goes to the 1.7 guide. However, the link farther down the page, under the print out the tracker title, the link there is to the 1.6 version, which is both out of date, and has the wrong advancement tracker as part of it.

I'll pass that on to Solice to pass on to the people she sees fit to fix it.
