I have not previously played at an RPGA convention event. [1] The guidelines state that PCs built by the players may have one 4th level magic item, one 5th level, and one 6th level. I assume it's acceptable to "substitute down," e.g., to take a 3rd level magic item instead of a 4th level one. Is this correct? [2] I also assume it is OK to bring multiple characters and decide at the table which one to use based on the party composition. Is this correct? (I can't decide between a warforged paladin, a dragonborn cleric, or a half-elf or halfling rogue!) |

There is no provision in the PHB for taking an item of less than your level... one would think that if it were intended, it would have just gone on and said "or less." I may be going extremely RAW, but I really don't want to have to deal with a DM hassle at Origins for having an illegal character. Also, on the same "better safe than sorry route," I wouldn't bring a warforged. The RPGA rules doc explictly states that "When the adventure is first available, the only resource for players is the Player's Handbook." Origins being the first time the adventure is available, I'm going to assume the strictest interpretation and not create my character with any material outside the PHB, including Dragon. I know, I know, that's the harshest interpretations of both of those, but like I said, without official clarification, I just know I'll be the guy to get the jerk judge who calls me on it. -Sutro |

The intent is that the Magazine's full issue needs to be available (released in the 4th week of each month) before you can use content from it. I will clarify this in the next update. If you're playing Return to the Moathouse at Origins, just use the Player's Handbook for now. (Long time, no talk Chris. I'll see you at the show!) |

I'm especially heartened by the second item... perhaps it'll give some cooling-off time for the those who FLIP OUT on a Candlekeep-like scale whenever something like Warforged is introduced in Dragon. And we really don't expect you to answer our questions so far off the clock, Chris. :P -Sutro |
