Ok after having awhile now to play LFR mods and get into 4th edition, I have one small request. PLEASE, PLEASE go back to AR's. These little slips of paper are annoying.

Not sure how others feel about this but I would prefer AR's over the slips and the other sheet of paper to keep exps and stuff on.

I find that having a binder page designed for holding currency (Ulta-Pro 3-Pocket Binder pages, for example) helps a ton with the slips of paper, and actualyl ends up saving me space.

At this point tracking entire sheets would serve to annoy me - I can fit 3x the certs in my binder this way.

To each their own I suppose.

Added bonus - 3 pocket binder pages also hold RPGA Rewards cards quite nicely.

If you don't like the format of the Story Award certs, throw them away. You can still play the adventures; you will just do without certain embellishments. then you won't be bothered by those slips of paper. Or periodically print out the on-line character tracker, which I think will have the same information, and throw the little certs away.

Also, a significant savings in DM print costs. I run most off my games off my laptop. Most of the time all I need to print out are 4 or 5 pages. Going to full sheets would double that.

Yeah, I've been playing other Living games that give out certs (Living City, Living Force, Living Death, Living Arcanis) for many years now, and those currency holder pages are great for certs like the LFR story awards.

And, I agree, the LFR system will take up less space in a binder than LG did.

I'm going to request this thread is merged with the other thread you started in RPGA General.

We don't need to duplicate the discussion.

Everyone in my group has seriously stated we would all much prefer the return to the Adventure Record system the Living Greyhawk had. They kept track of everything nicely, spelled out what you could or couldn't get and made the campaign feel more interesting.

Things in FR are getting ridiculous and honestly a few of these little story slips we've gotten seem like they're being handed out just because you /have/ to give one out at the end of the mod.

The Adventure Log tracks experience and gold nicely too, and in a condensed format. The story awards are meh at the moment. I would hope they serve some purpose in the future. I do agree they seem to be just handed out like a requirement. So I would suggest that unless there is some planned usage, don't hand them out. It makes them feel less special. As for ARs telling what you can and cannot buy, that is not entirely correct. All it gave you was a list of items that you could buy. The campaign guide already tells you that. I disliked ARs for several reasons. The space was one. But more importantly, I had to create several supporting documents: one for itme access (since some items were regional, metaregional, core or any), one to track all my influence points/favors/etc, and one that listed all my bonuses from metaorgs/favors in mods/etc. Because with 100+ ARs, it was a pain to have to search through them to find out if I had favor of X.

The online tracker, I'm not too impressed with yet but I still prefer the Adventure Log over AR.

Well you could use the little story award slip much better if it actually had the bundles on them with a little box to X to show which one you picked. It's actually kind of annoying to have to keep reminding people over and over what the options are.

Plus that would make the story away thing more useful to use players.

So at the top you have the normal story awards from the mod, and at the bottom it lists out the like 6 or 7 bundle options, including potion plus gold and more gold.

The only problems with that arise if the group misses finding a given bundle, or if there are three story awards and a high number of options for bundle selection it could get kind of cramped.

Personally I don't see that big a problem with the slips as they exist now. As a DM I'd much rather print off two pages per table than one page per player, which at minimum would double my printing costs. The rewards themselves may or may not be "awesome" but then, we haven't seen how they're going to be used later on. If you're just out to kill monsters and collect gold pieces, there's really no need to keep 'em around. Pretty sure there's enough room on the log sheet to keep track of which story awards you took, too, if it comes down to it...

The campaign staff frequently discusses how current formats and campaign rules are working. The current paperwork system is not one that is going to get changed anytime soon, but that doesn't mean people cannot discuss the issue and give their opinions. We certainly listen to almost all discussion about the campaign.

The economy is bad but its not bad enough for me to worry about 4 pieces of paper. How about including an AR along with the slips in the Modules? That way those that would prefer to use AR's can.

If any of the old LG admin could supply me with the editable PDF that they used for AR's I would gladly work on AR's for the current modules already in print.

Or anyone that is better at formatting things than I am in PDF format or Word format or whatever they used to make AR's out of.

I like the adventure record set-up (3 per page, etc.).

I'm not a fan of the certs with favours at the end. I still haven't decided how to deal with them - I'm probably gonna scan them (smaller) and reprint them many to a page, but that's a lot more work than I'd like.

Get them to design one. It has fill in the blanks. It has a place to tape/paste the 1/3 page cert or scan it in. They're good to go. They have their cake. We have our little bits of paper. Everyone is happy.

The problem with leaving the option up to the GM is that if I prefer the small sheets (and I do) and my GM at a con prefers the large sheets, now I have to have room in my binder for both.

It's much better for the campaign as a whole to keep these kinds of things standardized.

That said, if you personally prefer another form/format, more power to you. There's already precedent that shows if people want to create their own custom forms (Character Sheets, Adventure Logs, etc) they may so long as it still has the same information easily available.

I just disagree that putting two different forms into the modules is a good idea.

I liked the ARs better myself. I got a little bored of all the record keeping, but thumbing through the AR binder was sort of fun from time to time. LG did some good stuff.

However for people organizing conventions and paying for printing etc.-printing out 2 full color sheets is far more economical than printing out 6 for a full table. Why not put 6 on a page (and make them the size of a playing card)?-at the moment the favors seem compact.

If the issue is an optional printable AR, why not? I think more options is good, and I do like the ARs better (when I am not printing out 500 for a convention) and there are only 4 mods per region.

You are not going to get an editable version of the LG AR from anybody. Only a few people have it and it is a secured document.

I always found the AR's cumbersome.

I like how story rewards were handled with Xen'Drik Expeditions. Since the story rewards are reported with the mods for LFR, I hope that at some point we will have the option to print story rewards from the database. That way, players can print a sheet (or two) with all of their story rewards.

Players who don't mind the little slips of paper can still use them to track their story rewards.

My two coppers.

Yeah, but that only works if things actually get reported, which is the other reason I liked AR's, if I had a signed AR it counted as my tracking. Much easier then relying on the website to function and for people to both order and submit everything we've run.

It has been said multiple times that the paper tracking is the last word on your character and that the digital is for backup purposes. If you have your little slips of paper, or a sheet recording what you have played or whatever, that is all you need.

I don't miss the old ARs myself, they were cumbersome (but necessary for the LG campaign).

The thing you have to ask yourself is WHY you want the AR? Do you like the data in that format (because you are accustomed to it)? Or do you want all the information from the adventure in one convenient place?

There's other ways to go about it, but they require effort on the part of the player, not the judge/RPGA admin.

I personally like the new system, as it is less cumbersom. Each PC of mine has one sheet (my own excel sheet) that tracks gold and XP, as well as favor #s and bundle contents. Right now, all i need to know after an adventure are those numbers: GP delta, XP delta, magic items found or purchased, and favors earned (their code names).

i then copied/pasted the favors from the .pdf into a word document. Now i have a single word document (it's only 3 pages) with every favor out there in it. Then each PC's tracking sheet indicates WHICH favors they have!

As for roleplaying notes, i have a separate notebook where i write down what ACTUALLY happens in an adventure (as it happens). An AR wouldn't help me there (because i take notes DURING the adventure, not after).

Under the new system, each PC of mine has two sheets of paper for character records. Under the LG system, each PC had dozens of sheets of paper! Now i have ONE folder for SIX PCs! And that includes print-outs of rules items (like the artificer and warforged). Heck, with 4e i don't bother bringing my PHB half the time!

It should be easy to get a .pdf copy of an adventure (does download it or ask someone to mail it to you). With replay, there's no longer this fear of people reading modules ahead of time... it's effectively something that happens anyway.

Actually yes i liked the format of the AR's.

And I had 4 LG characters in 1 notebook with over a hundred AR's present as well. Not to mention metaorg docs etc.

And as it is now you have 1 adventure record sheet (that you can add up 3 adventures on) and then little slips of paper. They will all add up to space taken up no matter how you look at it.

Just liked the AR format better.

Layne Staley was the lead singer and co-lyricist of the rock group Alice in Chains and the supergroups Class of '99 and Mad Season.

Well either zombie Freddie Mercury or raise dead but obviously Freddie Mercury is in the Epic Tier so we need to start a collection for the GP

I really would rather not have ARs. It got to the point where I didn't even bother with favors in LG. If I didn't know if I had something off the top of my head, I told the DM I didn't (unless it was a curse or something negative). Otherwise I didn't care if it meant my character died, I was just too lazy to go flipping through 100 ARs in the middle of a game session.

In a 3-pocket binder page that's only 33 pages, so I for one will say "yes".

Heck, the binder pages are clear, so if I load two back-to-back in a pocket that's 17 pages (with space leftover).

Except, as far a I've seen, the things on the little slips of paper seem to be region specific, whereas many LG favors were not (and even if they were, you had to keep the ARs in order, so looking for a specific region was still a pain). I'll be able to order all my LFR certs by region for ease of lookup, which makes them organized and compact.

Well since it would be these region specific favors that would be listed on the AR's then where is the difference? A stack of 100 sheets of 8x11 paper is just as thick as a stack of 2.5x11 slips of paper.

Ordering them by region is the only advantage. And as we can see there are people in both camps. I just prefer the organization of the AR's and with them removing the tier slots for purchased magic items an AR works just fine. Just comes down to personal preference in the end.

crimsonsky

Then all you are arguing about is the size of the sheet of paper. A true AR would have your cumulative gold and XP totals, and thus would need to be sorted in the order received, not by region.
#41

_Mithreinmaethor_

Oct 24, 2008 18:59:35
Yes and there are what 12 regional mods that are 1-1 along with 3 core and 2 adps and 1 special mission? That is 18 sheets of paper you section off into your 1-1 category. Not hard to find one thing in 18 sheets. And since the story awards are listed as WATE1 and WATE2 etc you have a good idea that they are in your 1st 18 sheets of paper. Still not a big hassle to dig thru really.

But like I said it comes down to personal preference.

Not quite. Plastic sheet covers in both cases, for comparison.

100 ARs, 50 plastic sheet covers at 2 per cover, fairly thick.

100 story award sheets, 17 plastic sheet covers at 6 per cover, about 1/3 as thick.

Let's say that you do it a bit differently, organizing your story awards by region, with one sheet per region; that gives you 13 starting sheets, plus additional sheets (mainly CORE) for when you get more than 6 story awards from a region... It will start thicker than an AR stack, but will still reach a point, unless you only play CORE (and you can just not put in a sheet for a region until you get a story award from that region...), where the AR stack will be thicker.

With ARs in LG, you HAD to keep them in order, and losing one is a potentially major hassle. With the story awards, you can keep them together by region, and even by story arc if you want. Losing one is a pain, but easy to replace.

While I can see a minor benefit from an AR-like document, allowing each player to have a sheet in front of them listing both story awards and available treasure bundles, I think it would take more effort than it is worth. Remember that one of the goals of the new RPGA campaign guidelines is to reduce paperwork and hassle. Replay rule, anyone?

I know some people like carrying an extra suitcase to conventions, waiting on someone else to page through 100 sheets of paper looking for a story award, or begging the admins to walk one through the process of what happens when one loses one's ARs.

I don't.

Depending on what happens with the online tracker, I highly suspect that will end up being a total of 8 sheets of paper, not 100 1/3 sheet slips. Either I'll type them all in or I'll copy and paste once the online stuff comes on more fully. I really like the idea of being able to carry all my LFR characters in one easily replaced binder, while having the information quickly and relevantly sorted.

If you don't like the format of the Story Award certs, throw them away.

This is what I do - I don't even keep the the slips of story awards. I accept them as a matter of courtesy because DMs have taken the time to print them. Then I discard them later. I am finding that increasing numbers of players in our area are just not accepting them, though. A whole table at my Weekend in the Realms event waved them off.

Count me as a supporter of another adventure record system, if anyone is counting. Something that lists the available bundles for an adventure and provides a place to mark or check which you have chosen (or not) would be great - kind of like an AR...
