RPGA Staff,

With absolutely no evidence the contrary from Wizards of the Coast employees, I can only take the silence of WotC on the matter of GenCon 2008 to be a clear message that WotC will not be at GenCon this year. Setting aside the personal betrayal I consider this to be after being told (along with hundreds of others) at GenCon last year that 4e & LFR would launch at GenCon this year. And further having the reinforced at DDXP this year, I must simply request that you PLEASE remove the incorrect references to any WotC presence at GenCon 2008 from your website until such time as you are actually committed to attending this convention. Your misinformation has already caused me, and likely many others, to book airfare, hotel, and convention passes due to this false advertising, continueing to do so now is simply a travesty of decency.

One such reference is : "LFR launches at Gen Con Indy 2008"
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=rpga/news/20070905a

This does not say "at the time of", it says "at". You're not going to "at" GenCon 2008 apparently, so this citation and every other should be corrected immediately.

Except the RPGA is still intending to attend GenCon 2008 and is still planning on launching LFR at GenCon. The events haven't been submit to GenCon, because they're waiting on the results of GenCon's bankruptcy hearings before they proceed for various legal reasons.

Here is a brief FAQ concerning your questions:

Q: Why are there no D&D or Wizards events on the schedule posted for
Gen Con at www.gencon.com?

A: Wizards had not submitted a schedule of events by the Gen Con
deadline. Since we hadn't submitted our own schedule, none of our
events are in the official Gen Con schedule at this time.

Q: Will Wizards attend Gen Con in 2008?

A: As you may be aware, Gen Con is currently in chapter 11
bankruptcy. Wizards' plans relative to Gen Con are dependent on the
course of proceedings in US bankruptcy court. While we hope to
participate in Gen Con, we must await further proceedings in the
bankruptcy matter before we are able to confirm our plans.

The LFR Admin team have said (in a similar thread in the LFR forum) that they haven't received any notice that plans have changed for the launch, and the writing team is busily constructing adventures for GenCon as well.

So, be patient while the legal wranglings wrap up in the comings weeks.

(EDIT)

It's worth noting that WotC isn't the only company taking a wait-and-see approach. Upper Deck Entertainment typically hold their assorted Nationals for their games at GenCon. So far none of their games are on the schedule.

The ultimate point being, you're not being deceived. There's simply an air of conern for the companies that typically make a big showing at GenCon. Bankruptcy can do funny things to a company.

It's actualy quite unfortunate for everyone involved (GenCon, WotC, AND us the players). I'm sure WotC isn't thrilled about not being able to solidify their plans yet either.

I fail to see how the bankruptcy outcome affects the RPGA schedule. I can understand WOTC is waiting to see whether they will attend because that would have finanicial consequences. Does Gencon charge the hosts for running a game as well as the players? If not, then RPGA submitting their events and creating a schedule cost nothing but organizers time. If the "great matter" is resolved to WOTC's satisfaction then they can choose to attend and even do some grand promotion for the launch of LFR. Otherwise, just plan to run the events without some big whoopla. Worse case is Gencon is cancelled and the organizers have wasted their time. If RPGA is committed to being at Gencon, then why is there a wait to find out the outcome or nothing to note that on the website? We are getting mixed messages here. You are saying on the one hand, "We will be there. We are committed." But in the next breath you say, "We have to wait and see how the bankruptcy plays out."

Does anyone know when the court date for the bankruptcy is or an ETA on when this issue is to be resolved? If it is next week or so, then people would be more willing to wait and see. If it is not until July, then forget about it. Those of us who have not made travel plans or reservations will not attend. And a good chance that those who have already made reservations have already bought tickets to other events because they do not want to wait around and hope the RPGA can make it.

Someone else (in the LFR thread) indicated that the bankruptcy stuff was suppoeed to resolve itself this month (End of April). (Source)

So hopefully things will resolve themselves this week.

As for the RPGA waiting on WotC to make a decision - don't forget that WotC owns the RPGA. It's not that much of a leap to think that if WotC attends it will affect things like RPGA timetables, shipping options, hotel rooms that need to be reserved, etc.

If just the RPGA shows those things don't have to be integrated and intermingled.

Since the RPGA tends to reserve the entire Sagamore room each year, I also wouldn't be surprised to find that WotC is holding back the RPGA schedule information to try and get a better rate by renting all their space in a bundle.

These are just the reasons I can come up with off the top of my head as an observer. I'm sure there's even more "behind-the-scenes" stuff that only WotC would know about.

I do wish they'd say something official on the subject. . . but where lawyers hold reign there are often limits in place on who can say what - if anything.

They hadn't at the time I wrote that. I saw they were on the vendor guide, but a search for their card games came back nil.

I haven't downloaded the event schedule since I posted, but I'll check now. ^_^

So, it's a conspiracy now?

Since when did D&D attract conspiracy theorists?
