Just ran this adventure for an RPGA event with a party of six characters. Nearly a TPK. They limped through the second encounter (to the point where they were requesting an extended rest) and, given that five hours had passed, we just called it a night.

Granted, they were using the stock pregenerated characters which look to be somewhat lacking. Also, their tactics weren't the greatest and the dice rolls didn't come through for them. But, man, that dungeon is a meat grinder. Adventurers go in one side, little sausages go out the other.

Any other DMs have a similar experience? It could be that it was just bad luck, but I'm concerned with the impression folks will get of 4e if this is the first adventure they try out.

I ran seven rounds of this mod at Orgins and it is a tough mod. I was able to talk to the mod author and he informed me that it was written to be a tough mod since there is nothing to be awarded at the end other than the since of accomplishment. We were instructed, if anyone should die, bring them back at the end of the encounter so that they can play some more since this is just a preview mod for 4e. The preview characters that we received were not great for this mod either.

The first combat, if you run it like you are supposed to, can take up a good two and a half hours. I do think that if the party has one character type then this combat is alot easier.
[spoiler] I had one group with an Archer and they did really well with the creatures on the tower. [\spoiler]

The second combat takes almost as long. If the party doesn't figure out who the true threat is then I can see a tpk easily.
[spoiler] The enemy archers are really deadly even if you didn't have combat advantage against the party. [\spoiler]

I only had two parties reach this combat and they both did well but only one was able to finish it. I did talk with another GM there, I it believe was Shawn Molly the LFR Global Admin, and he would take the third and forth combats and combine them so that the charaters could meet and try to kill the BBEG. I would recomend that if you run it again, have a good set of pre-gens available for them to use and set aside about eight hours to play the mod.
