RPGA Age minimum...?

I see that on the DCI cards kids under 13 need to have that parental agreement portion signed on the card, but I don't see a minimal age. I have a player that has a 9 year old son and wants to get him involved. Personally I think that is cool, and as long as he is always at the events (and I think it wise for them to play the same mods too) I don't see a problem with this. I was just wanting to get some other advice and feedback from others on this and someone in the know on the official age requirements for RPGA.

Thanks and always good gaming,

This is entirely up to whoever is running the event.

The RPGA has no say.

As stated in another thread, it's not a bad idea to require a child to have an accompanying parent, but the minimum age is entirely up to the event coordinator.

As Karma notes, the RPGA has no minimum age requirement. Individual events may choose to impose a minimum age for participation, but that's entirely up to the event organizer.

I've seen players as young as 8 or 9 at RPGA cons and game days; many of them struggle a bit with concentration during a long event, but it helps a lot if the kid has an adult playing with him or her to keep the kid on task.

I think the only factors would be relative maturity and attention span, I don't know too many children under say 11-12 that can sit and do one thing for hours on end.

Yeah, a home group of us is playing Scepter Tower and one player's 7 year old daughter is playign with us. After a coulpe hours she runs off and plays in the other room until it's her turn to come in and roll dice. (and she usually rolls really well!)

Needless to say, she wouldn't be playign at a gameday or con. Not for a while yet.

I have played with children at cons before. The one thing I think that needs to be balanced in that situation is the DM needs to keep a close eye on things and make sure that he's not going tactical genius overload on everyone when the kid may be a handicap, but if the kid's good, throw the book at em. I don't think every GM out there is suited to run games with youngsters at the table though, it takes some extra skills =P

Indeed. I'm one of the DMs in our area who's got a lot of experience DMing for kids (and I enjoy it), and so, at our local cons, I'm frequently the DM who runs the table that has a couple of kids at it. Some DMs aren't comfortable running for kids, and that's cool (and, some kids are a lot more fun to DM for than others ).
