| #1venatiusDec 20, 2008 21:15:02 | So. I sent in an e-mail to get some RPGA/DCI membership cards so I could get folks in on the fun. I was told by e-mail there was a package of 25 on the way. What came in was a package of 5, a bunch of little Magic: The Gathering booster packs (apparently, by my interpretation of the materials, for distribution as DCI prizes), info on registering and tracking Magic: The Gathering tournaments, and a Magic: The Gathering poster. Is this just the default DCI/RPGA organizer package, or have I completely gotten the wrong materials? I'll gladly send the extra contents back if the latter, but since I'm not really that involved in M:tG, I'll probably donate the card packs to my FLGS if this really was what I was supposed to receive. Although, another theory: I did sign up for the WPN, as I (perhaps incorrectly) understood one had to in order to request RPGA/DCI membership cards. Is this something that's just sent out to people for signing on with the WPN, and the membership card package is being sent separately? I really feel that perhaps I've stuck my foot in the wrong puddle here. My reading of how to order membership cards said I should sign up on the WPN, but it looks as though it's perhaps signed me up for more than I had intended to. I don't want to see any of this awesome stuff WoTC's putting out entirely out of its own pocket put to any misuse, so I really want to make sure I can get this all squared away. |
| #2_Mithreinmaethor_Dec 20, 2008 23:53:23 | That is the WPN Signup package you received. |
| #3venatiusDec 20, 2008 23:55:45 | Gotcha. I'm glad that's at least more or less in order then. I don't want the materials going astray though. Since this isn't quite what aspect of the WPN I intended to get in on (it's D&D all the way for me, pretty much), unless there are better ideas, I'll just make the cards a donation to my FLGS so they can sweeten their tournament pots a bit. |
| #4_Mithreinmaethor_Dec 21, 2008 7:52:59 | I am the same way (D&D all the way) but with all the changes at WOTC the WPN is a way to try and advertise their other games. Unfortunately as a GM and an event organizer you have no choice but to join the WPN. Which means you will get promo materials in the mail from time to time and the emails once or twice a month as well. Oh well my delete button works just fine ![]() |
| #5littlewallDec 21, 2008 8:55:28 | I never got any kind of start up package at all for signing up for WPN. I wonder when that started. I'll have to ask dci@wizards about it as we are looking into starting some Magic events. That kit sounds like a great way to try to get things going. We currently do the Delves and I am running any where between 3 and 8 players a week for those. We had some issues in the beginning (not getting the Delve kits in time) but it's picked up. Weather and the holidays are hurting attendance somewhat lately though. For some reason, people don't like to come to the FLGS when it's -10 F with 30 mph winds and 6" of snow on the ground and it's still snowing. ;) I was there. Where was everybody else? Had a few hardcore players show up, enough to make it an "official" game anyway. |
| #6venatiusDec 21, 2008 11:36:23 | Phew, well, I'm glad I'm not the only "D&D only" person in the WPN. I was half worried I'd get a "You IDIOT! What were you thinking?!" (Well, if not quite, since everyone here has been very good-natured) I do think it's really cool they're giving these materials out. So if there's no particular way for me to ensure they're distributed by the proper channels, I'll at least get them to someone who can. It's not that I dislike M:tG anyway. I just don't have the money to keep abreast of it! A book every month or so is fine, buut... Anywho, littlewall, sorry to hear about that! There's a delve night coming up in my town in a little while, and my normal ongoing game for that night is canceled, so I'll be attending. Any idea what I should expect or prepare for? I'm assuming the call will be for level 1-ish characters, but I'm not quite sure if that's the norm. |
| #7kinevonDec 21, 2008 16:02:40 | The December (& January, according to another thread) Delve is designed for a party of 5 8th level characters. Create a character according to the RPGA basic rules, but make it 8th level, so it gets 3 free magic items, one each of 7th, 8th and 9th level, and 2,600 gps to spend on additional magic, rituals and alchemical items. Basic non-magical items are essentially included free. |
| #8venatiusDec 21, 2008 16:07:05 | The December (& January, according to another thread) Delve is designed for a party of 5 8th level characters. Oh, excellent! I'd probably have been entirely unprepared without knowing that. Thank you! I'll get geared up. |
| #9littlewallDec 21, 2008 17:11:55 | Hey Venatius, I'm glad Kinevon posted the levels for you. I had the great idea to go Christmas shopping today when it's -30 F windchill rather than stay inside where it's warm and I just started looking at the forums again and saw your post. Although I do have to say that first encounter of the 8th level Delve for December took us longer than the "1 to 2 hours" Deves are advertised to take. It was more like 3 hours. And that was with 4 players (5 characters tho). Depending on the players luck, healers will be your best friend. Make sure you don't leave home without one. That's one of the biggest problems I have with the open Delves. Sometimes I end up with nobody wanting to play a Cleric. So hopefully you'll have a balanced party. And thanks Kinevon for mentioning that other post about the Jan Delve's levels. I was wondering about that as I haven't got mine yet. |

I had the great idea to go Christmas shopping today when it's -30 F windchill rather than stay inside where it's warm and I just started looking at the forums again and saw your post. It's all good. I love the Cleric and Warlord, so I'm quite confident we'll be fine. But that's good to know! Fortunately, I should have plenty of time that day, so running over is just all the more time for fun. For parties of unknown compositions, I like to show up with characters of a couple different roles in hand, so I can settle into a needed niche. |

Just hearsay, haven't seen the January Delve yet either. And I ran it for 4 PCs, and they blew out most of their stuff in the first encounter. Ugly. I house-ruled it and gave them a long rest so that they wouldn't die in the first few seconds of the second encounter, since they had burned most of their dailies, and were down a significant number of surges. And the second encounter still hit them hard. Although that rogue with a +17 to hit pretty much blew up the nastiest opponent in the second encounter. Especially with that blinding attack. ![]() Then we ran out of time for that day. Heh. |

I also never got any kind of start up package at all for signing up for WPN. I've thought about doing a Delve night, but not knowing what that includes, I'm looking to see if there'll be a local one. |
| #13cincinnatusDec 27, 2008 18:27:45 | I got about 10 packages of those Magic cards and instantly threw them away. |
| #14venatiusDec 28, 2008 14:41:09 | I got about 10 packages of those Magic cards and instantly threw them away. Aw. Couldn't you have at least found them a new home? |
| #15arnold_judas_rimmerDec 28, 2008 16:14:21 | Aw. Couldn't you have at least found them a new home? Yeah, it's not that hard and you could have supported your local gaming community. |
| #16_Mithreinmaethor_Dec 28, 2008 17:18:11 | They do have a new home. A landfill somewhere close by. The same place that mine now reside. Well ok my son took some of them and plays with them. But still. |
| #17arnold_judas_rimmerDec 28, 2008 17:48:56 | That's your lost seeing as you spent money on them or at least owned them. Plus you could have sold them, so that's even more money you just threw away. If that's how you really feel about the game, why are you still here? If you threw all that away, then what purpose would you have to post here besides to post controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic messages? |
| #18_Mithreinmaethor_Dec 28, 2008 19:45:49 | That's your lost seeing as you spent money on them or at least owned them. Do you even know what we are talking about? We received a package from the WPN that included 5 DCI cards a Poster and a bunch of Magic the Gathering cards. None of which we will use and it was free. I have no interest what so ever in MTG and there are already events organizers for it here in town anyhow. They get the same stuff I just got so I tossed the stuff given to me. So there was nothing D&D related what so ever in the package. The delve was not shipped in it there was nothing in it to use to help recruit anyone for the RPGA just MTG stuff. So if I were on the MTG boards I wouldnt be around anymore. Well never would have been there in the first place. |
| #19arnold_judas_rimmerDec 28, 2008 21:07:43 | Eh? I missunderstood you because I never recieved my package. |
| #20kinevonDec 28, 2008 21:43:33 | You should have kept the DCI membership cards, since DCI numbers work for the RPGA now, and those were probably the cards with the activation number on them, making them the preferred sign-up option for many folks. And, unless you have no churn, ever, having a few "quick" cards can be of great benefit to anyone. |
| #21_Mithreinmaethor_Dec 28, 2008 22:30:00 | You should have kept the DCI membership cards, since DCI numbers work for the RPGA now, and those were probably the cards with the activation number on them, making them the preferred sign-up option for many folks. I have like 50 or so of the DCI cards with the activation codes so no worries there ![]() |
| #22venatiusDec 29, 2008 1:26:00 | That's your lost seeing as you spent money on them or at least owned them. Actually, the packaging (at least on my bundle) was quite explicit that the cards were not for resale, so I think perhaps that's not something to be encouraging. |
| #23arnold_judas_rimmerDec 29, 2008 5:07:12 | That was the wrong package. I never got the bundle we're talking about. |
| #24venatiusDec 29, 2008 5:19:47 | That was the wrong package. I never got the bundle we're talking about. Boy, the impressions I'm getting from this are terribly conflicting in that regard. You DID sign up for the WPN, yes? |
