I've heard that it's possible to sign up to RPGA without going to a game. Since this is the best option for me I am very interested in how to go about doing this.

One option said to sign up for a page, I have done so and I am waiting to be contacted. One option said to e-mail a certain group, which sent me a rather unhelpful autoresponce.

Now, I am not sure if I have done this right so someone with a little experience to tell me if I did the right stuff or what I need to do would be great, thanks.

You have a couple options here!

  • Find a local RPGA group and ask if they have an extra card and spot at the player's table
  • My favorite - contact your favorite local gaming store (FLGS) and ask if they have any extra DCI cards. Most any store that runs Friday Night Magic will have a ton of these cards and won't know what to do with them - they're usually very happy to be rid of a card or two.

Bear in mind that (for the most part) you will need to pick up a DCI card now, not an RPGA card. Once that's all said and done you should be ok. If you're doing it so that you can take the Herald DM test.... well, start scheduling home gamedays and have at it!

You can also sign up on the website linked in the RPGA FAQ. It can take a few days for the DCI staff to e-mail you back with a number, but by all reports it a fairly reliable way to get a new number. Especially handy if you're looking to start a new RPGA group in your area.

Ok, thank you. I'm not sure if my local store(s) have what I need. They didn't show up on the store locator, although I didn't look for DCI.

So you're saying that I need a DCI number first, and then I can get an RPGA card?

There are no longer separate DCI and RPGA numbers. They are now the same number. DCI cards allow easier signup than RPGA cards, so don't use RPGA cards.

DCI/RPGA cards are not products, so they would not show up on a locator. They are sent out to the stores in big pads whenever the stores run events so that the stores can sign up new players. Any of your local stores that run Magic tournaments or Friday Night Magic will have lots of them. You will need to go in and ask for a handful of spare DCI cards, but it should not be a big deal.
