I added some RP hooks as suggested in the thread on these boards and added some additional descriptions to the environs to make the setting more evocative. I built up a lot of the Nerath history connections throughout the cave via free skill rolls for various PCs, such that each encounter seemed to be a bit of a walk through history and part of their ongoing campaign in the region. I brought the player's best friend: plenty of ruling in the PC's favor. I allowed them rerolls when their dailies or action point powers failed to hit. This sped up the game and let them try out the powers they were excited to use in heroic moments. I also gave a few bonuses for things like charge-jumping off of cliffs and using strong tactical moves. I used two of the techniques suggested by the recent Transparency article. First, for the final fight I told them Sarna's remaining HPs once she was bloodied, allowing them to count down with me with each hit. That did indeed have a great effect - the fight was very tough for them, and this gave them purpose and 'light at the end of the tunnel', culminating in an epic last round. I also let them roll all recharges, which worked pretty well. It didn't so much produce anxiety or anticipation, but it did allow for good banter back and forth as we kid about who was a good DM helper and who was helping out the players. That was pretty good given that the 5 players were all new to me. I am using initiative tents these days, and I brought those. They always help the party know who is next. In this case the cards helped them prepare for the rogue. By the time I had my monsters on the board they had self-shuffled the cards around to reflect the expected delay for the rogue, saving time. I wanted to do a bit more but I lacked the time (family events taking up my time!). My friend Gary had some good props. He used a clear acetate sheet to protect and flatten the provided game-mat. He also had color PC tents with names and roles on them (cool idea). Overall, this was a good time and it was a really positive 4E promotional event even without a DM doing anything too special. |
