Star Wars Saga Edition the Red-headed stepchildren of Wizards of the Coast/RPGA?

I am playing in a local Dawn of Defiance campaign. My GM had requested that each player sign up for the rewards program Wizards of the Coast has because he thought there were some neat cards we all could earn by using points we would earn for completing adventures in the campaign. However, when I went to the RPGA site to login to sign up I was unable to login. I called Wizards of the Coast technical support and was told by the guy on the phone that apparently Star Wars Saga Edition does not count on the rewards program and that they are not even counting points for us. It seems it only counts for D&D.

Does anyone think eventually they will add support for us Saga players? Is it even worth signing up for if the system doesn't include us? Also, what is the point of doing all the official stuff we have to go for to participate in Dawn of Defiance (like 28 point character build instead of rolling a toon) if we don't even get credit for it?

The tech support person is in error.

You can earn RPGA points for playing Dawn of Defiance, if the GM sets the games up as sanctioned RPGA games. However there are some drawbacks.

1) You cannot get an active RPGA number (easily) until after you play in your first RPGA event. Once the first event with a new number is reported, and the GM sends the RPGA card counterfoil back to Wizards (or you pester customer service) your account will be activated allowing you to log into the members area on www.rpga.com. Your password is likely to be the state and zipcode of WotC (WAxxxxx - look on the website for the zip code). It might be your state and zipcode instead.

2) You do not earn any points until you sign up for D&D Rewards, which I believe you can do from within the members area. If not, there is a form somewhere on www.rpga.com to fill in.

3) This means that it is almost impossible to get points for your first RPGA event.

4) All that the points do is to earn you D&D rewards which, as they say, are for the D&D game. They are in the form of campaign cards which add options to the RPGA run campaigns. At present it does not appear that there is any plan to include SW:Saga cards; I expect the next batch of cards to be half for Living Forgotten Realms and half for the replacement for Xen'drik Expeditions, if that campaign is announced in time.

5) You do not receive any cards until you have earned 20 points. Once you have received 20 points, the next time that cards are sent out (three times a year) you will receive three cards for every full 20 points you have earned, with excess points counting towards the next rewards duration.

If you are still interested in jumping through the hoops (which might be worth it if a few of you play/GM in other RPGA campaigns) then make sure that the GM has reported your first event (e.g the first 'part' of DoD - note that he doesn't have to wait until you've finished the adventure as all you are reporting is the names and RPGA numbers of those who took part) then try to log in a few days later. It's likely that this won't work - it used to be that your membership would activate automatically, but now it seems that something has to be done first, requiring you to get in touch with Customer Support (http://wizards.custhelp.com is usually quite good) or for the GM to send in the membership applications and wait for them to be processed. Once you have done that successfully, you can register for D&D Rewards and start earning points from the second 'part' onwards (and play in LFR!) If I were you I would simply not mention SW in your contact with CS. If you are sure you played in a sanctioned RPGA event which has been properly reported, all you need to say is that you played in your first RPGA event and you cannot log on yet, and ask them if they can activate your account. It will take a few days, or perhaps a little longer. Longer between now and D&DXP, undoubtedly.

Not sure who you talked to, but they've been misinformed.

Dawn of Defiance is a free campaign from WotC. The RPGA has agreed to adapt it for RPGA play, which in turn earns players Rewards points for play ( I believe 4 points per module/chapter).

If you've never signed in to your RPGA account before the default password is *supposed* to be your state abbreviation and zip code (I live in Ohio, zip 44107, so my code would be OH44107).

However, since most accounts are created by being entered from playing a session, there's a default password of WA98055.

If you login via the "Sign In" link on rpga.com you should be able to setup your profile and change your password to whatever you like from there.

Now, the "catch" is that once you DO start earning points, there haven't been any announced plans to release rewards cards relating to Star Wars SAGA. The next mailing is supposed to include 4E campaign cards, which likely means they're all going to be Living Forgotten Realms (since the next D&D Campaign System campaign is still unannounced).

However, by playing Dawn of Defiance and reporting your play to the RPGA, WotC will be getting an indication of how many people are actively playing SAGA. The better these numbers are, the more likely WotC will keep making SAGA supplements, and the more likely we are to further see RPGA campaigns are rewards written for SAGA.

In other words - it's well worth it to sanction your DoD SAGA modules and report them. Both for the rewards (especially if you play D&D), and to help garner support for SAGA.

Added bonus - someone recently posted that they spoke with customer service, and it seems there's going to be a GM test specifically for SAGA in a few months. That would appear to be a positive indicator, IMHO.

It's been explicitly stated by the RPGA that they're going to be using the play numbers for DoD to gauge support for a "true" RPGA SW campaign in the future. So, as WolfStar says, your direct rewards for playing DoD as an RPGA event may be limited, but the indirect rewards may be worth it to you.

Thank you all so very much for your wonderful help! The default password was indeed WA98055 and with that I was able to access my account and change my password. I also saw that under tracking it had me listed as completing The Traitor's Gambit (chap 1 of DoD). This is great news. It doesn't show any points for me of course since Saga dpesn't count for that as yet but this is definitely a step in the right directiopn and in getting the RPGA/Wizards of the Coast to more fully support Saga Edition gamers.

Afterall, Star Wars Saga Edition is their best product that Wizards of the Coast has released to date!

Re-read pedr's reply to you. The Dawn of Defiance adventures can be played for Player Reward points...each "chapter" is worth 4 points. However, you don't automatically earn Player Reward points simply by being an RPGA member; you have to actually sign up for the Player Rewards program. Once you do that, you'll earn Player Reward points for every RPGA game you participate in. (You may want to suggest to the other members of your group that they do the same.)

To sign up for Player Rewards, click on the link below, then click on the link at the very bottom of the page that says "Sign Up Now":

Speaking of WotC not giving a crap about Star Wars... Are they ever gonna post up The Queen of Air and Darkness for ordering on the RPGA list?

I'd read that the DoD modules were delayed due to Rodney having some RL issues. I think I read today that the module itself has only now gotten uploaded to the WotC site. Given that most (if not all) of the RPGA staff is at DDXP this weekend, I'd expect that the RPGA placeholder for the module would be uploaded next week.

Thx for the update! I diden't realize DDXP was going on now. That sux if Rodney is having RL issues, he has done such awsome work so far and I hope to see a hell of a lot more from him.

Just a small tidbit of news for you SW:S fans.

When asked about future SW:S camapigns at last night's RPGA Member's Meeting, Chris told us that Star Wars is "looking good" hinting at the possibility of a future (Living?) Star Wars RPGA-only campaign.

So, keep playing (and reporting) Dawn of Defiance, then go roundup a few friends and play MORE Dawn of Defiance.

I'm waiting on the same thing. Module's out, they just need to put a placeholder in the database.

Hmmm. That's interesting. I put it in the database. It must've not been saved correctly. I'll have it fixed this weekend.

There are two other things I'd like to share for Star Wars players out there:

1. In the next batch of rewards (coming in April) there will be 2 Star Wars Saga cards mixed in with the D&D cards. So you may receive a Star Wars card in your rewards mailing.

2. We want to have a Herald-level judge test set up for Star Wars Saga Edition. The only thing we need is content for the test (about 100 questions or so). If you're interested in writing questions for the test, please PM me. As soon as we get enough questions, a prospective judge can choose which test they'd like to take - D&D or Star Wars Saga.

Well, that's darn cool. Thanks for the update, Chris!

why 100,when the D&D test is only 20 questions long or is it so you can have different questions each time some one else take its?

The latter.

You want to have a pool of questions so the test can choose a random selection of questions each time someone retests.

It prevents (though it doesn't eliminate) people simply memorzing the same twenty questions to pass after a couple failures.

GOOD NEWS SIR!

But when in April should my players expect them in the mail, and I assume they all need to sign up for the D&D rewards program before then correct?

Just wanted to thank you and keep the cards comming!

Also, how many points will my players need to get these cards anyway?

4 or 8 points? (one or two chapters)?

Thanks,

Yes, and they need to accumulate the necessary points AFTER signing up. Any games they played prior to signing up probably don't count.

20 points.

On another thread, there was described a clever way of enabling players to get credit for their first game, it seems. It requires the co-operation of the senior GM.

IIRC, it was to enter the new numbers into the RPGA reporting system, click 'Submit session', then enter the names for the new people and click 'Submit session' again, but then do not click 'Validate all results'. Wait a few days until you have told all the new members to sign up for D&D rewards (which might require emails to customer service, or you to send the membership cards in and wait for them to be activated), then log back into the RPGA site and click 'Validate all results'. All players who are registered for rewards when you do that final step should get reward points.

Note, I've not tried this, but thought it sounded like a good work-around.

No need to mail in the cards. T'was my trick (discovered quite accidently when an XE module was waiting to have its story objects added to the database).

When you enter the RPGA# and then the First/Last name of a new RPGA member in the reporting form, that creates an account with the default password (WA98055).

This gives the player(s) a window to signup for rewards before the event is validated (which is when points are created).
