Hello,

I am kind of going all out and not lurking so I apologize if I am doing it wrong. I am trying to start a local RPGA group here in Chico CA. There is a large, all be it loose, group of gamers here in town and a lot of us have conflicting schedules. I wanted to start an RPGA group because it would facilitate drop ins and mixed schedules the best.

So far it seems we really can’t start a local group without retailer support. That’s not something we really want. We would like to run something, using RPGA standards and recordings, independent of any gaming store. Is there any way to start a group without the support of a WotC retailer? Whats the best threads to look at for getting started.

Thanks for the help, and I apologize if I am missing the obvious... low passive perception .

The main things you need are things that are most readily available in a FLGS, but you might be able to access without.

1) A place in which to play. Works great in a store (lol), could also be a school, a library, or someone's home. Obviously you need neough space to accomodate all of your players.

2) A way to get the word out to players. Usually works great in a store (lol again), but if you know about the other people you're interested in drawing, perhaps there is some way to let them know what you're up to.

That's about all that you really need. Once you get started, you can use a Yahoo group or some other similar online resource as an information/scheduling medium (you just need to point people to it the first time, that's the hard part).

Tip: check out warhorn.het as a slot scheduling tool.

Hope that helps,

Generally speaking, the RPGA mods are downloadable, so you can play them anywhere. The only real hinderance is for certain events (like Weekend in the Realms) where Wizards mandates that the location of the event be a public one (i.e. there's a posting alerting any and all to come check it out).

If you know the players who are to be in the group, then you just need somebody to take the GM test and pass it. Once that's done, they DM the mods and everyone else can play.

Thanks for the tips!

There is a sports bar in town with a back room that they are going to let us use. We are just having a hard time getting information on how we become an official RPGA group. Am I just confused I mean do we even need the retailers kit?

Is there a way to sign up for the RPGA online? The character creation packet I downloaded says there was, but I can't find it.

I'm so confused lol.

Ben,

The main thing you will all need are DCI/RPGA membership numbers. If someone in your proto-group already has one, they might even have some membership cards.

Otherwise, if their membership cards are old (less than 10 digits on them) or no one has any, you can email dci@wizards.com to request a pad (or more, if needed) of 25 membership cards to let everyone join.

Once you have numbers, and have got them activated in the database, someone can take the Herald GM test, allowing them to sanction events, order modules, and download the modules, and report them after the event.

At some point, all your members will probably want to join the D&D Rewards program in order to get the freebies for playing, and the Herald member(s) will also want to join the GM Rewards program.

Note, while you need to have at least one member of the group at Herald (or higher) GM level, and that member has to order modules, he does NOT have to be the actual session GM.

That's fantastic!

I am going to Pacificon this weekend, and I was going to hang on some poor RPGA volunteer and ask him questions until I break him. This is a much better solution! So they will send a pad of membership numbers which we can use to recruit people of our proto group? Unfortunately two folks who are already members and I will be the only ones going, we have about 6 other people who aren’t members but are very eager to join.

Once we have membership numbers (we have certified DMs) we can download modules and report online? That’s awesome. So to recap…

“Ben you’re a fool! You do not need a retailer to sponsor you or any silliness like that…”
“Ben get your e-mail on and get some membership cards that will let you become a member and your friends can become members too.”
“Ben from there you are a full fledged group and can report your awesome adventures online! Mozel tov to you sir!”

I hope this is the case, if so fantastic! Is there any other tips or tricks you would give me? I really appreciate how responsive everyone has been, and I will try to repay the favor some how.

Thanks for playing
:§Ben

(If anyone of the fine folks who have helped me this far will be at Pacificon let me know and I will by you a drink providing you are of the legal drinking age in CA)

Odds are good that they'll have a stack of membership applications there...ask them nicely, and they may be willing to part with some for you.

an official RPGA group.

No such thing. There are individual RPGA members, who play RPGA games.

I have been wondering about the Herald DM test. That hasn't been updated yet, has it? Do I really need to know 3.5 inside and out to run 4th?

I'd feel much better if the Herald Test covered the current edition rules.

There is a new 4th edition test.

Both tests are open-book. They're more tests to see whether you can look up rules (know where to find them) than general knowledge tests.

Hello,

I am kind of going all out and not lurking so I apologize if I am doing it wrong. I am trying to start a local RPGA group here in Chico CA.

It sounds like you have the bodies. In LG, I was of the opinion that it took about 30 players to have the critical mass to have weekly games for more than 6 months. With LFR, I think it will be fewer.

A place, whether a single public space or rotating home space is a must have. If the sports bar works for you, you're golden. A pizza place or similar might work, too.

The last thing you need is someone who makes it happen. It sounds like that is you. You'll occasionally need to push and prod via an email list, ask someone to run when no one has volunteered, etc. I strongly advise a dedicated Yahoo group or similar for intragroup communication. The Warhorn list may be needed or may help pull visitors from Sacramento.

The following is an unofficial discussion group for the Pacific region, which includes California: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/lfrpusa/ .
