Thievery / SoH in RPGA Games

Okay, I'm curious how these really work in playing RPGA home games. Some friends and I have played about a dozen mods and we've noticed that at the end of the mods you get item or X gold ect. Also I noticed that no monsters or NPC's have any sort of indication of what they might or might not be carrying on their person. So, as a GM, can I assume that if the thief pick pockets a nobleman or merchant that he finds, say 10 gold or something. Or if he successfully SoH a priest wearing a ring with the symbol of his god and gets the ring, does he get to keep these items in game, like record them on his sheet?

The way we have been playing is basically that you really can't collect items like that from people or the DM makes it impossible. Priest ring for an example, I wanted the ring as a fellow follower of the god and offered EXTREEME amounts of stuff for it, tried diplomacy and other skills to get at it (no thievery) and he refused. I can kinda see where he came from, I admit, but whatever.

Anyways, how do you decide what to say a NPC has on his to be stolen and if the thief gets it does he Permanently get it? Like the extra 10 gold for example. And is that RPGA Legal and recognized or however you would say it. Would it be acceptable outside a home game, like at a convention for example, if my char had an extra 200gp for stealing at lvl 10 or so.

Are the any RPGA Rules or Guidelines for this kind of thing?

Sorry for babbling, and thanks for the help. =)

At this time, in LFR, no, you cannot get any treasure outside of what's "standard" in the module. So, even if your PC is picking pockets, you can't get any additional treasure that way.

In some earlier RPGA campaigns, such as Living Greyhawk, there were actually rules for a PC to gain additional gold through several methods (including thievery as well as performing). However, there's no provision for that in LFR at this time.

You can not take anymore out of the module than is awarded to you at the end of the module. The caps at the end of the module are the maximum gold / exps and items that you can receive.

There have been items given as story awards that are minor items.

Okay, but could I SoH and item I see in the game assuming it has no value? Like say a woman is wearing a ring or a pendant of some god I favor or any reason, I just like it. can I steal the item and have it on my char for flavor or if my char loves the color blue, can I take a person's blue.... hell, shoes, and wear them? I understand where this could be troublesome if I tried to barter with the item later in this or some other mod, but could I take something from someone and keep it legit for possible rp reasons?

If it has no value at all, then it can just be part of your character's outfit and its origin is irrelevant. If it has monetary value and can be bought or sold, you should deduct its GP value from your current total wealth as though you were purchasing it between adventures.

Or talk with your DM and fellow players beforehand. In the end a PC cannot take away more gold then is in the adventure. The reason for this balance, D&D is based around a specific gp:xp ratio. In a home campaign a DM can modify future treasure based on expenses and extra income. In a world-wide campaign this is impossible.

There is a solution though if you really like these things for your character RPing. If you play the game with the same people in a semi-homecampaign like fashion, you can arrange with the DM that he siphons of some of the encounter treasure and puts it in the pockets of random NPCs or to allow you to negotiate over the rewards offered for a service. Just be careful that the pickpocketing is not going to dominate the game and ruin the fun for the others at the table.

As for taking items with no monetary worth, MarkB has said it all.

Also note that with your DM's permission, you might use those skills to fill any 'gaps' in your treasure.

For example, if you failed some encounter and aren't going to be getting paid (meaning you are getting less gold than the maximum allowed in the treasure summary), you might try to earn a little on the side with a little larceny, but you'd still be limited to the max gold cap.

Of course, a good DM won't make this 'free'. If you fail, especially badly, you might very well end up LOSING gold for getting caught and fined.

But that's all DM empowerment. Your DM doesn't have to accommodate you if he doesn't want to, so don't count on always being able to do this.
