We are organising our first LFR event: weekend in the realms. For the third part of the adventure we currently have 8 people. Since a full slot takes 1 DM and 6 players, the 8th person is left over.

You need 10 people to be able to organise two sessions simultaneously, correct? 2x 1 DM + 2x 4 players.

What do you do when you have only 8 or 9 people ?

Apologise to one of the players.

WotC and the RPGA passionately believe that a D&D session with less than four or more than six players (excluding the DM) is going to be substandard, to the extent that it falls beneath the quality level the RPGA wants to support. There is no easy way around this, within the rules: someone misses out. Comments I've heard over the years from RPGA staff etc make it clear that they realise that this is a problem, but consider it far less of a problem than allowing the sub-standard quality of a three- or seven-player table. I imagine that in the back of their minds they realise that if seven-player tables were allowed they would quickly become the norm, especially at larger conventions where the request for tickets often outstrips the supply of DMs. This would then mean that most tables would end up being poor-quality.

I've been trying to organize things so it's first-come first-in. You've still got time before WitR so you never know -- you may end up with enough players.
