Aug 01, 2011 19:50:08 I've been a player of D&D for some years now along with a wide variety of other RPGs, and when 4E came out I have to admit it wasn't what I was looking forward to. I've read a lot of reviews about people screaming this isn't D&D while others hail it as the best version yet. IMHO, it isn't D&D, it's a completely different game with a D&D paint job. Now I'm not saying that it's good or bad, I'm saying the game shouldn't have been labelled D&D, I think it should have been released with under it's own title. I think the reason so many D&D players are so angry about 4E is because they were expecting a streamlining of 3E and 3.5E and instead WotC took almost everything D&D and pitched it out the window in favor of a completely new system.

Personally I liked 3.5E with some exceptions, though a lot of people are right that it can get tedious. Fighter's have almost no use for the CHA skill aside from Intimidate, the stats were designed so certain classes only needed certain stats allowing for ridiculous amounts of min/maxing, and there were a number of rules that made no practical sense, they were rules just cause the books said they were. There were so many suppliment books that it turned into a race to see how many pluses a player could pile up in a single round, so many presitge classes that they didn't even seem like prestiges anymore, just different classes. The other thing I didn't like was on Epic levels it turned into: "I attack like this." "I counter with this." "But I have a skill for that." "I have a counter for that." "But this gives me enough pluses to beat that." I was starting to wonder if I was playing D&D or a game of MtG with two blue decks.

That aside I still think it's a fun game and I remember my old 3.5E group having to stop playing for 5 minutes or so at times because we were laughing so hard we couldn't do anything else. I think it all comes down to the person and their play style, some DMs and groups like min/max hack/slash games, while others like different editions for various reasons. I do still think D&D 4E should have been released under a different title because in my opinion it's too much of a leap from the decades established D&D system. Taking everything people have played, built on, and learned, then hurling it out the window for a game (with serious WoW elements) was a bad idea. Personally I won't be playing 4E. Many old D&D players don't like the old system, people who play 4E will be lost on anything before that.

To the OP. The new version was 4.0, not 3.75. Of course it's different. But you're the one missing out. 4E is incredibly elegant and many old D&D players like and love it.
