Don't you think 4th edition is like a card game?

It seems to me that 4th edition is like a card game. I don't like the limitations on the NPC magic user...players who have studied the tomes will know the powers that can be used against them.

Eh, not really. Someone on this board has described it to be a tabletop FPS. I think that's an apt description, because Muhmorpagurs tend to have more complex rules, and wargames are nothing like 4E.

Is like a card game? Its based on the card game! I dont even know why they call their Magic the Gathering RPG "Dungeons & Dragons"? This Magic the Gathering RPG (aka 4e) is as much about D&D, as Joseph Stalin was about humanitarian efforts.

What D&D is about, is to be able to play in your own world, or even a world you have read about. If you want to add things into the game that is not covered by the rules, or remove things you just dont like, just do it! Dont let the 4eDMG makes to think twice about house rules - YOU MUST NEVER BE A SLAVE THE RULES, THE RULES MUST SERVE YOU!

The reason why 4e feels like a card game is, that it way to systematic. You get a uniformed set of powers each level, you a set amount of swag per game, and a number of things was added for or removed from the game for the sake of game balance (like being able to use ring after 10th level, and the removal of the wish and polymorph spells). This is a unfortunate side-effect of the game being controlled by a CCG company - they are so use to setting standards for competition-play (in the case of D&D, convention gaming), that they lost sight of what RPGs are really about!
