Dungeons and Dragons 6th Edition - DnD 6e Predictions and Speculation

I believe that Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition successfully fulfills the goal of compiling the "classic" feel of DnD from previous editions. It's a good design that hits the mark for the most part.

Given the fact that it has to remain profitable as a brand however means that that the future development of a 6th edition is a safe assumption.

Given the fact that 5th edition went in a semi-retro direction, I predict that 6th edition will take the game partially down experimental roads. Only partially because the designers at WotC have to be careful to retain as much of the existing consumer base as possible.

The extent to which 6th edition experiments with mechanics and concepts will depend not only on player feedback of DnD 5e but also the feedback data they can gather from other RPGs that try new things. Since game mechanics can't be copyrighted, and very few attempts to patent mechanics will ever succeed, the designers will probably scour the gamut of tabletop gaming for the Omega Molecules needed to approach the perfect evolution of DnD.

They will definitely keep some sacred cows but will also definitely consider butchering other cows to pave the way for growth.

What kinds of decisions do you see the designers making? And how about the marketing; where do you see that going in the future?

What games do you think might influence DnD 6th edition? What would you like to see added or removed?

My predictions for 6e

  • There is no actual game, only a brand, known as "Brand 6e"
  • There are no core rules, everything is branded options.
  • New brand options are published online every Tuesday midnight.
  • You can only play over the internet, and only on Wednesdays.
  • Every PC and NPC has a unique IPv6 internet address.
  • It is illegal for human beings to act as DMs. All DMs are online quantum thinkbots.
  • The treasure you find in dungeons is real bitcoins.
  • 'Elf' is a class.

I think it's too early to say. History shows us that a good edition lasts over 10 years. I'll see you in 10 years to talk about it :p.

I think it will be the logical conclusion to 5e.

Here's what I think the players will read when they open the 6e PHB:

"Ask your DM."

Here's what I think DMs will find in the 6e DMG:

 "It's up to you."

6e will be the errata'd reprint of the 5e books that is released when WotC finally picks a new setting to focus on when my yet to be conceived grandchildren are ready to start playing D&D.

Honestly I think it might be a good idea to split the brand, 5e for the 'retro feel', and instead of a '6e' we get soem other game where we get a game that focuses mor eon being good than being retro.

My prediction is that it will be a lonng perips of time compared t the time between some of the other editions untill we see 6th edition.

Over time  they will introduce more optional rules/moduals.

At some point do a inventory to see what are the moduals that are actualy being used, and bring out a revised PHB swaping out some of the rarely used mosuals for more popular ones.

If it turnes out there is a group of optional rules/moduals that is always used together and cots a bit deeper into the system you might even see a ruleset on paralel to the core books.

the DnD 5th edition "instert name here" ruleset will apaear at some point having the mosuals as the standar rules and  runing in paralel to the core books like they tried doing with essentials in 4th edition.

When one of thise rulesets starts outselling the core books they might even fase out the core books.

Im not seeing 5th edition lasting 10 years. The market has changed and hasbro is too impatient for that. They made wizards rush 4th edition and 5th in the end. Im hoping 6th is gonna be a revised version of 5th with some lessions learned. I would also like to see a revised 4th edition some day as I feel that wizards shattered its base in the end to a almost unplayable state without the builder. Rebrand it if need be, it would help keep their devs busy and I still think there a market for it if they united the split 4th edition fanbase.

I predict 6th edition will have Wil Wheaton.

I don't think there will be a 6th ed.

5th feels like a return to the past to appeal to old goofballs like me.... as we pass away I think that D&D will become an extremely small niche market. And, given the internet, nothing every really 'goes away'. So all the various TTRPG systems will be available forever and serve the few remaining TTRPG'ers well.

My prediction for 6E will be that the edition comes somewhere in between 5E and 7E.

I don't think there will be a 6e. Period. If 5e becomes 'unprofitable' it'll just slink away. Hasbro will keep the brand, of course, and just sit on it for a 100 years, doing nothing with it, but also not letting anyone else use it.

5e will slowly chug along for awhile, and the D&D brand will continue to exist. But that brand will go more into video games, toys, novels, CCGs, board games, MMO's, maybe even another movie....

Really, all we need is 4e (a great, new, innovative, balanced TTRPG system with heavy tactical combat rules) and 5e (a retro DIY TTRPG system that 'feels' like the good ol' days).

I fully believe 6th edition will not debut. I think, in the even of D&D:next failing, we'll see a complete removal of product support of D&D:Next and we'll no longer receive content or updates. The site will, mostly, remain untouched except for a few things like Cons being updated. They will continue to pilfer the TTCRPG market with video games and we'll see Android / apple games, and even some brand recognition that says "Hey, we're still here!!" but nothing on the TTRPG front.

Then after 10 or so years have passed since the franchise's TTRPG has become obsolete, they'll re-launch the system with something different, albiet keeping with current TTRPG styles. Whether that's copy-paste Paizo's 2nd edition at that point or doing something more board-game like with minatures like Hero/Monster Clicks.

OR if 5E tanks we'll see a push for things like the whole Skylander and Disney's infinity line but with D&D. That way they can push Minatures (which, I know they're not) as well as video games and still have a tool set for DMs. You could probably even make customized miniatures and have a chip build in that will recreate what the miniature looks like into the video game.

They first have to reboot the D&D cartoon as a live action feature film.

I think inspiration will turn into something like spiritual attributes from the riddle of steel RPG. Ie, significant to combat and making D&D into a largely narativist RPG (note: Narrativist does not mean lots of narration - it basically means soap opera but where PC actions decide the story (instead of the other way around))

Maybe WOTC will come to the realization that they can make a new edition without making a new game.  Just tweak the parts that they have discovered are broken and not scrap the entire system.

Hello folks,

I've moved this thread to RPGs General since it's not on topic for any 5th edition forum.

Thanks,
