First Time I Could Care Less About GenCon

I have been to GenCon a many of times since 2004 and I always took a pack of friends with me. This is the first year at I am not going. This is also the first year that Wizards is not releasing a miniatures set and there will be no previews of upcoming minis. DDM was the primary reason why we went.

Plus, so far, the release schedule for the second half of 2011 is less than stellar. Actually, it is downright lame. Heroes of Feywild will most likely suck like Heroes of Shadow. The Gardmore Abbey would better be served as a mega adventure book like Tomb of Horrors. Mordenkainen's will be a shadow of the Adventurer's Vault. That's pretty much the release schedule. Blows.

There is a few more releases but bleh. the only thing worth a damn are the Encounters and they are not for sale. Too bad, they are pretty decent modules (and they seem to be getting better at it). Even DDi is a hodge podge without being compiled. What a crappy year for D&D.

Just quoting to emphasize the relatively personal nature of the entire content of the post (even the positive). Doesn't in any way invalidate your feelings on this, but it is as relevant to most of us as my reasons for not liking coconut macaroons.

You don't like coconut Macaroons?!?!?!?!  Get off the internet right now!  j/k

I've never been to a Gen Con, and I cna't say this year is one that makes me sad.  What I wouldn't have given to go to gen-con, I think '05 when they announced Saga edition, or the Gencon with the 4e release, or the one where cthulhutech was first brought out.

This year it doesn't seem like much is happening.

That may jsut be because they're actually saving the announcements, but ...meh... i don't think so.  I think it may just be kinda a down year.

Oh.  Yeah!.  Kitteh px rule.  So kewl!!!!

Given your history, seeming to nitpick and look for any excuse to get upset about D&D, I have a hard time imagining you satisfied in previous years.

You know that to express a lack of interest, you'd have to say you could not care less?  Right now, you're claiming via thread title that you do, in fact, care more than you have in previous years.

@seeker, do you like coconut?

I have a psychological allergy to it. If I find out that I am eating coconut, I vomit. Stems from my grandfather forcing me to eat shredded coconut from a bag when I was four. Irrational, but real.

Um, funny story to tell.

My (step)father forced me to drink a can of tomato juice when I was maybe 8.  I was sick at the time, and unrelated to the juice I also vomited.  To this day, the smell or taste of fresh tomato makes me very ill.  ketchup, spaghetti sauce, no issue.  It has to be the raw taste.

Popcorn. I ate popcorn at the theater in 1994, when I went to see Rocketeer. The next morning, I was vomiting a trail of half-digested popcorn all the way to the bathroom.

I've been able to work in a theater since then, one year. But I've not been able to eat popcorn since then. And I used to like it. A lot. =(

See, the problem is the misplaced blame.

Really the reason you were vomiting was because you saw the Rocketeer.  I have friends that had similar experience from seeing that movie.

RPGs releasing at Gen Con: the One Ring, Airship Pirates, the Void (at least you can play it, not sure about buying it).

Big announcements: Fantasy Flight Games has the Star Wars license for minis, cards, and RPGs (and are hiring four new people). Paizo and Wiz Kids are creating pre-painted plastic Pathfinder minis (these don't replace the unpainted metal Reaper ones but are another option). Not directly related to Gen Con, but also good news RuneQuest 6 is on the way.

Looks like Chaosium will have a booth and 30th anniversary of Call of Cthulhu is out as well as a hardcover of Basic Roleplaying.

Pretty big Gen Con this year in my opinion especially considering how beat up RPGs have been in the recent past.

@ the OP: You say that you "could care less" about it, which I interpret as meaning that you have levels of care which could be lower. Are you sure you didn't mean that you "couldn't care less," indicating that you just don't care about it at all?

Of course, I have seen a number of instances in which someone used "could care less about X" to mean what I interpret as what "couldn't care less about X" means, but still.

On a side note, I really do not care for coconut. The flavor is alright (sometimes I would even admit that it tastes good) but I really cannot stand the texture.

I also cannot eat small powdered donuts due to a bout of seasickness I experienced after eating some. Not that it has anything to do with this thread, of course.

A 5oz bird can't carry a 1lb coconut. It's basic science.
