The other day I was browsing my local bookstore when I saw a game I had never heard of resting on the RPG shelf: Anima: Beyond Fantasy. Apparently it is some European/Japanese fantasy RPG. I was wondering if anyone around here has played it and what they thought of it.

Thanks!

I'd been looking forward to this since I read about it on the FF site several months back. I saw it last night at a bookstore. Excited, I flipped throught it, read a bit and went to find my Girlfriend to show her. We checked it out and honestly I am a bit disappointed. for over 60$ I just don't know that it is really worth it. The idea sounded cool, but the setting was pretty close to a campaign I ran with D&D about five years ago. The more the two of us spent looking at it the more disappointed I became. It's unfortunate really, as I have pretty much been waiting with baited breath for the book. I suppose on the up side though I saved myself 60$.

I know this threads dead but what the heck. I really enjoy the system and I like the setting as well. The rules are pretty straight forward, character creation is deep and you can make just about any character type you want to which, to me, is always a plus. (It works off of a point type system to determine everything from secondary abilities, attack and defense, and different weapon knowledges)

The art is pretty good, but the rules looked pretty heavy; I wonder how it compares to D&D.

I haven't played it.

I did take a look at it. But my opinion is that it's stupidly overcomplicated.

I have played the Shadow of Omega noncollectible cardgame, which is a dandy little thing, easily learned, which emulates an RPG storyline without having any set-up. For the RPG, I tried looking up reviews:

It seems characters are made of a blend of class and point-buy and combats reference a damage chart. I like rules-light systems like the Open Versatile Anime RPG, so this turned me off, but see what you think.

I tried my hand at creating a character for Anima in case a game started up (Goku Son from the live action move; yes, you're reading this right), but I never got finished.  Very much not something you can do without a guide.

Furthermore, the rules for appearance (yes, that's actually quantified) and the Style skill (you actually have to roll a check to see if you're allowed the draw the scar that your hero just got in a way that let's the character stay at your predecided level of attractiveness or not) have really made me question this game.
