IF...and that is a big if, IF 5E is around the corner, it would have to be the best RPG system ever designed or else I feel it would have no chance of anything other than failing.  Although to be fair, if the devs have hit some kind of brick wall in the design of 4E, they might have to launch a 5th Ed. in order to be forthright with their fan base, because attempts to change 4E will just be called 5E and WoTC would be roasted for not calling a spade a spade in that case.  Kind of damned if they do damned if they don't, but again, if they need to make a new edition, then being upfront would be the best way to go, it just better be REALLY good.  All hypothetical of course.  My 2 cents.

I agree!  If Wizards has hit a wall then it would be better to come out with it and say they are going to go a different route.  It would be better to come out with a new edition than to keep coming out with mediocre stuff just to pass the time.

Hehe caught me editing my wording in that quote, but only to clean up the language a bit.  But yeah.

Can anyone even confirm that Wizards had set up an announcement that was cancelled on Saturday?  You'd think something like that would have been on a calendar of events or some sort of agenda somewhere.  Sounds like Morrus got a bad rumor.  He hasn't mentioned anythign abotu since Saturday, and I never heard of any sort of Wizards event that had a change in focus.

Here here.  I agree with some of the discussion in teh thread too.  An edition announcement is much bigger than just an announcement.  it's a whole shift in direction with the complimentary things that go with it (marketing, posters, a sense of excitement and pride).

Fanfare.  It's the name of the game.

So I doubt it was 5e.  Maybe, oh I don't know, that cancelled board game, or they cancelled ravenloft again.

Yeah, there's not even the slightest chance in hell you plan to announce 5e, get to GenCon, and change your mind at the last minute. WotC isn't Joe's Back Garage Games. If they're at a point to announce a product then they've committed to it and there's no going back. With all due respects to Morris, I think he's just heard nonsense. Or maybe someone out there WANTS there to be 5e rumors. Lets not kid ourselves that rumors of 5e are good for WotC or 4e and there are plenty of people willing to make up crap to get at people they don't like...
