I'm thinking of trying to play D&D, but I really don't know where to start. I'm trying to decide which edition to get first of all, and I've heard alot of criticism of 4th and that people say 3.5 is the best but I don't know why. I have no knowledge of the rules so can someone fill me in on at least some information about why people seem to hate 4th? I have heard it was streamlined for newer players, but is the game streamlined so much as to be restrictive and not allow for certain races and classes to be played or for player vs player encounters that I've heard the game has? Or is it just because it was released so soon after 3.5? I know 3.5 is out of print and I've seen books for it online but they're crazy expensive, so I don't know if I should just go with 4th as a beginner or try to find older editions for a reasonable price.

People like 4th because in an average group, everyone is coming to the table with a similar power level. Everyone can contribute relatively well. Character class roles can feel a bit restrictive to some people, "Oh I'm a tank/dps/controller/healer".

People like 3rd because they like to feel rewarded for system mastery, and learning niggling details about the game. Certain classes can grow out of hand, when played by the right people. Character class roles are basically "I kill things" or "I kill things better than that first guy."

Both games are ultimately good, but they do different things.
