What are the qualities of the best GM?
To answer this question please think about what other DMs have done that has impressed you. Trying to avoid personal exultation here ^.^.

1: Flavor: sure every idea won't be the most unique I've ever heard but even keeping in the realm of a cliche can be difficult. I admire a GM who can keep the flavor going even on those long campaigns.

2: Freedom: As a person who DMs most of the time I know it is difficult to handle giving players any true freedom. However I think the best GMs are able to roll with it. My best player experiences are with GMs who allow role players to have fun and explore maybe even at the cost of a planned story.

The best GMs don't plan a story to begin with. They look at the characters they're going to be dealing with, look for the great big waving red flags on those character sheets, and build a story that drives towards those, on the fly.

The best GMs are good performers, but know that what they're doing is not performance, nor even storytelling per se, but kind of a jam between all participants and the system.

The best GMs know that in RPGs, a secret is really just a plan.

The best GMs know that there's more than one way to play, and that no, actually, the complete list of ways to play is a bit longer than "the way God intended" and "the wrong way." They also, however, know that not every way to play can happen at the same table - and they know how to get an incompatible player out of a game without rejecting them socially.

The best GMs learn from everything going on in gaming - and in entertainment, theater and literature.

The best GMs are generous people. They are always looking for ways to make their players more awesome.
