1) Pathfinder is allowed to be discussed is it is too much work for the mods to close threads.
2) When all these forums get text analyzed for content, marketing will find it easier if the major competition is mentioned in conjunction with their product. Ideally, this will lead to a better product.
3) Crossover in the Market. People might argue until their hands cramp up but here and there the undecided or unconcerned end up trying both.
All this is also why Paizo wants 4e discussion on its board. If WotC kills off D&D, it won't be a victory for Pathfinder. Similarly, if Pathfinder folds it will be worse for WotC-D&D in the long run. People aren't going to magically start liking 4e's rules and vice versa. There will just be less people involved in D&D.
Right now my favorite supplement is the Gloomwrought box, and I've even come to like things in the other 4e planar books I didn't want.
Or perhaps the mods can't do anything until a more official voice changes the rules they operate under?

Yet there is a logic to the company that produced 4e to continue to allow these PF related threads to exist. They want to know what is going with PF in relation to 4e, not PF to itself as that provides little info for their future market strategy.

I think I've mostly been looking at PF because they're consistently getting new content.
Paizo also has PDF sales to back up publication. I also feel like I can sink into the game even when I'm not playing -"> Every time I visit the D&D web site these days, I think Pathfinder is winning

That was years ago, and more to do with 4e's initial advertising than the ruleset. (I babble about it the other thread.)
But now, having had a chance to go over the 4e cosmos with a more balanced judgement, I enjoy aspects of it. My planar stuff is still Great Wheel focused but I'd be lying it I said 4e hadn't made interesting stuff for its own cosmology.
I posted a question in a pathfinder thread that has since been deleted. After posting my question I left to get food so don't know exactly what happened to cause the entire thread to be deleted (not that I'm sad to see it gone). My question was "why are there 5 pathfinder threads on page 1 of 4e general discussion" I could see there being 1 or 2......but instead of keeping the discussion in a few thread people feel the need to keep making more and more threads. This thread is another example of a thread that did not have to be made.

I was responding to the threads that have since been axed actually.
I don't own stock in either company and the next game I'm hopefully going to get to play in will likely be GURPS.
anyhow, I have no problem with Pathfinder being talked about here. But, when there are 5 threads (and there really were 5 when I made my post) its completely out of hand. WOTC should delete redundant threads, they just take up space and knock other issues off the front page.

But I think the issue that matters most to WoTC is what their competition is doing. Once you are discussing anything about the game it means you likely have purchased it. Besides getting new players (which may or may not be working with 4e, seemed popular at my old game store but they also run 3.5 and I think 2e) the biggest question is tapping into the PF market.
Edit: This isn't meant in a "your opinion doesn't matter way b/c corporations suck" way. I just think logicially Wizards wants to know how their game measures up against PF. Note that PF has a 4e section to its boards, most notably b/c they sell 4e stuff. Wizards, for image reasons, can't have a board designated solely for their competitor yet still needs to keep abreast of how their product is stacking up.
Also, the other posters are probably right, there are other places in the WOTC forums where this topic would make more sense.

Hey the NE fiend / daemon book is out near the end of this year, so I'm doing my best. Several other projects going on, but can't say much since they're not all on the product schedule yet.
