Wild 5E Prediction (bear with me)

What if WotC isn't working of Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition, but instead a whole new intellectual property for their RPG line. With no "official" connection to D&D, they would open themselves up to worlds of new design space, and wouldn't be bogged down by the unpleaseable mob that is the D&D fanbase.

It could still be the spiritual successor to D&D, but not bear its name. I think WotC is capable of putting out a really good RPG system, if they're willing to abandon the ancient and unwieldy d20 system.

I know, I know, D&D is too valuable an IP for them to abandon, and from a corporate viewpoint, the brand name probably looks like a pretty sweet cash-cow, but you can't milk a cow forever. Sooner or later, they go dry, and you have to give them some time to fill up again. Maybe shelving D&D for a while would do the brand some good. They could bring it back in 5-10 years with a brand-new polish, and the nostalgia factor will work in their favor.

I'd say this is a reasonable prediction, except that I don't think they'd abandon D&D just offer something different and that was clearly different and would forever be what they want it to be. Then they'd still make D&D but cater for those who wanted the sacred cows but still try to make the game the best it could.

I rather expected a Heos of the Modern World or... a successor to d20 Modern at one point.
