5E Mass Combat Questions

My group is running a Birthright-inspired campaign and we recently needed to use the Battlesystem (5th Edition Mass Combat) rules.  Overall we were satisfied with our first exposure, but here are a couple questions we had.

1.  When a solo unit joins a stand, does it still retain individual actions during its turn (besides "commander" bonus actions)?  For example, when the stand attacks, does the PC still get his own attack "action"?  We are trying to understand how the PCs can continue making an impact during battle besides spell casting.

2.  When an "isolated" solo unit makes a melee\ranged attack, how much damage does it do?  For example, a paladin attacks a stand of orcs with his sword, if he hits, how much damage does he do because it seems unrealistic for him to do full weapon damage to the entire stand.

3.  "Retreat" Action
The rules state that any stand in a unit that takes the "retreat" action can move when adjacent to an enemy stand, however, the "Battle Actions" section begins by stating that all stands in a unit must take the same action or take no action.  Does this mean that if one stand "retreats", then the rest of the stands in that unit cannot "attack" that round?

Thanks

Thanks for your response.

Your comments line up with our opinions, so I feel better continuing the game in that fashion.

In regards to the Mass Combat supplement, I'll continue to modify them as necessary and wait for a WoTC survey so I can provide some feedback.  I'm confident these rules will be refined down the road and our group plays loose enough so the current draft won't bog down our gameplay.
