~5e rules question .. Warlock eldritch blast .. ability 'agenizing blast' deals Cha mod extra damage on a hit. so if the Warlock is 5th or higher and hits more than one target to both target's take the +4 or just one target? (as DM I ruled only one target takes damage but I don't want to short change my player

Both targets were hit. The Invocation specifies each hit gains the Cha Mod, therefore both targets take 1d10+4. Further, if only one creature had been targetted (and thus hit with both beams), it would of taken a total of 2d10+8.

Yup.  If a fighter at 5th level uses his attack action, he gets two attacks, and both attacks get the strength bonus to the damage rolls whether each attack was against a different target or the same target.  So a fighter with +4 str bonus attacking with a longsword will do 1d8+4 for each attack.  Eldritch blast + agonizing blast is treated the same way.

I don't know why this question keeps coming up in "vague-rules" type threads. The language seems quite clear that the damage is applied on a hit. Since multiple attacks are rolled at higher levels, multiple hits may be achieved.

Another Warlock question.

There are invocations that allow you to cast a spell at will, "without expeding a spell slot or the material components".

I assume this means that the spell still has to be one of their Spells Known?

No. You can cast it by virtue of the feat/feature saying you can cast it.

Thanks Yunru, do you have any reference for that?

Other wise I'm happy to have that as a ruling, in general it seems to be one of those "it's not too power full and increases the fun" rules.

The rules on specific vs general. Might find quote later.

(Fire dragon) Sorcerer 6 has the same thing with Scorching Ray for what it's worth (although yes, that uses Spell Slots).

No no, you can't just ignore the comma like that.

A comma links two statements together.

You can cast mage armor on yourself at will, without
expending a spell slot or material components.

Means two things:

  1. You can cast mage armor on yourself at will
  2. You don't expend a spell slot or material components

The first enables you to do it, the second just adds to the first.

Or if you want an in-the-book example, I raise you the entirety of Mystic Arcanum. A Warlock can't naturally learn 6th level and higher spells, as you can only learn spells you have a slot for. By your logic, a Warlock can't use Mystic Arcanum at all since said Warlock doesn't have it on it's spells known list.

Fair point on the comma

I certainly think it is reasonable to read it this way, I wasn't actually argueing against the idea just wanted to understand the ruling more.

Cheers
