| #1MalarkyJul 06, 2014 11:18:38 | situation cave large piles of rocks staligmite and tights... heros with light cast on them so full light brightness pesky archer goblins
ok 1st turn the goblin is hidden behind a large pile of rocks get advantage on heros,
if they move back behind the rocks can they hide.
in this instance the rocks are full cover... assume the hero cant get to them this turn to melee combat.. so its a ranged shoot out situation for a turn
now as the goblin attacked its no longer hidden his special power is to hide again as bonus action.. so.. it shoots it move behind full cover and hides..
full cover is out of sight... but the heros know he's there.. is he targetable.. e.g -5 for cover only. or not targetable without a perception check 1st.
( is the perception check like a bouns action, or would it be an action)
if i could get in to melee range no problem ,, is the heros only change to shoot him a perception check? or a reaction to shoot the goblin pops out agian?
if it diffrent it the rocks where only 1/3 cover of less..
now lets change it slightly.. the goblin pops out and shoots then move further back in to cave out side of the heros lights or its only dim light , then i assume its fine to hide..
any more detail or great example when you can and can not hide would be great...
Edit had a few answers bit still clarifying..:

The heros run around said rocks, there is now no cover (after running around the rocks) between the goblin and the heros nor is it lightly obscured there is plenty of light which the heros brought with them.
That means no stealth/perception check needed (nor an action used to seach) right? They just see the goblin and can attack without disavantage no matter what the stealth check was. |

| #6MalarkyJul 06, 2014 14:17:14 | So to get that straight
i should use the tearm total cover instead of full cover..
if the rocks are full cover i cart hit him any way his hide isnt needed..
if the rocks are 3/4 cover and he hides. (a) he's hidden, i need a perception check to even target him! if i pass perception i can hit try to hit him but he will have cover bonus as well. +5AC if i fail the perception i can not try to hit him. (b) he's hidden and gets +5 ac bonus however if i pass the perecption check i can hit him as normal no advantage disadvantage , if i dont pass perception hegets the +5AC bonus
if the rocks are 1/2 cover same A/B as above..
i think its A....is that right?
if the +5AC bonus a disadvantage that can be canceld? the rules seem to jump around between calling it disadvantages or just +5ac if you take being hidden to mean all enermy allomost conisdered blinded to your pressence...
dim light would be disadvantge on the perception rolls..
you can't hide from a creature that can see you
that sentence seem to say it all, to me it means after the 1st volly the goblin can not hide again as combat has start both sides alert.. unless it goes behind full cover.. if can then hide.. and gain the advantage attack.. 3/4 cover or less it can not hide.. so not more advantage attack..
however the fullcover hide and advantage attack.. vs a reaction shot...the recaction shot is coming out of cover. and into sight...??? does the advantage attack trigger

In order to hide, the rock would need to be big enough to block him from sight altogether. If the rock is that big, you can't attack him anyway, because he would have total cover. If he his not hiding (or if your perception check beats his stealth check), then you at least know which rock he is behind. If his stealth check succeeds, then you are not sure which rock he is behind.
If the goblin is indeed hiding, I'd say that he could on his turn poke his head and arms out and shoot at the PCs with advantage. At that point, he would not be hidden any more; the PCs would know where he was. |

| #9jaelisJul 06, 2014 15:03:12 | If the goblins have a bonus action to hide then yes, they could start hidden (with total cover), lean out and shoot with advantage, then duck back and use their bonus action to hide again. The characters could indeed counter that strategy by readying and action to shoot the goblin when he appears. Or of course by beating his stealth check, or by moving to a spot where they can see around the boulder, or by closing to melee... |

| #12MalarkyJul 07, 2014 2:08:52 | ok final final bit. using "active" not "passive" percetion before an attack. or as a part of a rection
situation, goblin has attacked and hidden, hero has run up but still not in range he has nothing else to do but ready a ranged attack for the goblin he knows which rock the goblin is behind when the goblin pops out to shoot..
perception is it :- is its a free action, a bonus action or an action that would take place of the attack.. but coudl some how help colleagues, e.g +5 to there passive perception for point ing out the goblin so there attacks might hit..
|
| #13jaelisJul 07, 2014 4:12:12 | The check against passive perception happens when the goblin tries to hide; no action for the character. On his turn the character could spend an action to search.
If it works, he can tell the other characters where the goblin is. Not sure how that interacts with hiding though. |
