"Pulling punches" to knock out instead of kill when casting spells

The rules say an attacker can choose to knock out instead of kill a target when dealing damage that causes the target to reach 0 or negative hit points. Does this apply to spells, too? Can a wizard "pull his punches," so to speak, when casting a spell? Does he have that kind of control over the magic?

Though depending on how the DM wants to handle it the spell could just render them to 0 and you could do what ever after that. Like feed them a potion to keep them alive.
