| #1GraystaffApr 23, 2015 18:57:33 | I have been DMing for years, and I have never gotten into as many arguements with my players as I have with 5e. I am hoping some one can shed some light on some of these issues we've run into.
Q1: The Elemental Adept Feat. By the book, this feat allows the user to overcome damage resistance of the choosen type. My players want to argue that damage immunity is simply another form of resistance, and as such this ability should by pass it. My arguement is that immunity is a seperate catagory entirely, and is not effected. Regardless of a feat, a fire elemental shouldn't be taking damage from a fireball, right?
Q2: Evasive Footwork. The question is where does the bonus end? My players like to play at bouncing between two squares on the grid, arguing that this way, they don't stop moving, and so the effect should persist indefinitely. Surely this manuever wasn't designed to give my level 11 player an armor class of 30 for an entire fight. A bit broken if it is.
Q3: The Way of the Open Hand Monk's Open Hand Technique. With out any restrictions to size of CR, this ability allows a 3rd level monk to push a CR 20 Huge Dragon 15 feet with a simple attack. Really? |
| #2AndrewJOApr 23, 2015 19:14:11 | A1- You are correct, immunity and resistance are different, elemental adept does not bypass immunity A2- Sure, if on their turn they want to bounce back and forth, they get the bonus. They lose the bonus when they stop to attack or use a similar action(there are no rules for moving while attacking) and between turns when their movement ends. A3- Yes, really. If the dragon fails the STR save, it is pushed. |

I could maybe see the players getting upset about that if the DM kept throwing surprise rulings that went against commonly accepted rules, but seeing how two of your questions are coming firmly in favour of your having ruled at least RAI, if not RAW, that doesn't seem to be an issue. If these arguements were slowing down gaming at the table, I would probably calmly explain before the next session that, at the table, the DMs ruling is law and disagreements should be kept until later (although highlight that mention of possibly overlooked rules is still permissible). If such a ruling completely breaks the vision a player had for a character, they are welcome to rebuild that character at an appropriate time, but anything relying on capitalising on a perceived loosely worded "loop hole" should really be passed by the DM first.
(The caveat to this being if everyone at the table is enjoying the rules discussion; if there's even a single player who zones out, or looks bored or exhasperated by the rules discussion, then such discussions are getting shut right down!)
That said, Q1 seems fairly clear cut as resistance and immunity being separate, else there'd likely be some rules indicating "two sources of resistance = immunity" or what reducing/removing resistance means to immunity.
Q2: Evasive Footwork seems to me to be RAI not to last past the turn, similarly to how, despite the concept of continuous movement, you can't jump further than you have movement left for the turn. My suspicion on the wording being so that you can use it with Dash and similar. That said, I may be open to the interpretation of it being over multiple rounds, but only provided that the character did nothing but move on their turns until it ended.
Q3: This I do agree with others that it is intended to ignore restrictions such as size. Of course, whether a level 3 monk really wants to push a CR 20 dragon that can probably swat him with one of it's Legendary Reactions is perhaps another question... |
| #6HorwathApr 24, 2015 6:14:21 | Q1, you're correct, but it wouldn't be ovepowered if you knockdown immunity down to just resistance for that elemental type.
Q2. by RAW it stays until you make some action insted of moving, by RAI, it could be until the end of your turn or maybe until the start of your nex turn.
@CraggleRock, you can jump farther that your movement left, you are just in mid air until the start of your next turn.

Specifically, your players and you aren't on the same page with regards to the goals of play and what I'm reading is that the result is something of an adversarial relationship (even if it's not hostile).
Check out this article on the Goals of Play for D&D 5e. If you find it useful, share it with your players and come to an understanding. When a group keeps these simple principles in mind, you may find that these arguments over rules and the like simply go away. Good luck. |

There does come a point where you just have to make a decision on what makes sense to you and stick with it. I discuss my decisions and reasoning with my players but ultimately someone has to make the final call. The DM always makes the final call even if the justification is effectively "Because I said so".
Other than one guy who pouts when I make a call he doesn't like it works fairly well and I'm running multiple games right now so I must be doing something right. |

| #28Danny_MontannyApr 26, 2015 13:46:46 | Though I agree with most of what was said here, the thing I have trouble with is the few that mentioned stopping to make an attack. Does it say anywhere that you can't be moving while you make an attack roll? You can move, attack, move, but have to stop to do that? If it states it somewhere, then whatever, but it definitely isn't my idea of what dynamic combat should be. |
