A Question About the Disguise Kit

Let's say I am a rogue who's proficient in deception. Let's say I'm also a charlatan who's proficient with the disguise kit. If I try to disguise myself, I would be making a deception check; but I'd also be making a check with the disguise kit. Do I add my proficiency bonus twice?

The reason for the disguise may also come into play. Using one to remain unrecognised amongst creatures that might know you might require a Charisma (Deception) check, whereas using the disguise to assist in a performance (acting) might be a Charisma (Performance) check. In either case, the description of a Disguise Kit says it "lets you add your proficiency bonus to any ability checks you make to create a visual disguise" (PHB p. 154). So, I would say you would get your prof bonus for Deception plus your prof bonus for the disguise kit, in the example you gave.

sometime to do a check, you need prerequisite, for example if you want to do a stealth check, you first need to be out of sight (heavily obscured, invisible, halfling hiding behind a medium creature, wood elf hiding behind natural phenomena, etc...) first or if you want to disguise yourself as the town mayor to give order to the guard captain so the guard will help you in your mission, you need to look like the town mayor otherwise your deception will fail automatically or you have to do a persuation check as a stranger asking the guard captain for a favor.

 

Being disguise as the mayor you might receive an automatic sucess on your request, since the guard captain take his order from the mayor and would not question them. Or you might have advantage if the guard captain find the request odd and unusual, or if the guard captain do not appreciate the mayor or if the guard captain got full control of his army and do not require the mayor permission etc.. (depending on the social context the DM gave you between the Mayor/Guard captain relation)

 

But you should have 1 check to see if you look liek the person you want to impersonate or if you get caught as soon that the NPC see you as being a fake. Then you should be allowed to do your deception or persuasion check if there is an uncertainty about it.
