There isn't a general ability proficiency to my knowledge.

The proficiencies that refer specifically to abilities (Strength, Dexterity, etc.) are saving throw proficiencies, they have nothing to do with skill proficiencies. So your barbarian with saving throw proficiency in Strength and Constitution and skill proficiency in Athletics does not get double proficiency bonuses to Strength (Athletics) checks.
