Does dropping an item count as your one free object interaction on your turn?

Example:

On my turn, I fire my hand crossbow, then I drop it on the ground.

Between turns, someone hits me and I use my reaction to use the Shield spell.

On my next turn, I pick up my hand crossbow and fire it.

Can I then drop it on the ground, in anticipation of needing to cast a reaction spell again between turns?  Or did picking it up make it so I cannot drop it again?

As an addendum: can I choose to drop my weapon at anytime .. such as when it's someone else's turn.  For instance, if they are swinging at me, can I drop my weapon in order to cast the Shield spell?

Crawford says:

@RSIxidor Does dropping an item count as your one use of “interacting with an object,” or can you drop an item as a “free/no action.”

In most circumstances, I would allow a character to let go of something without using an action. — Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) November 5, 2014
