Does Action Surge give you a 2nd bonus Action?  From what  I can tell it doesn't but it seems some ppl are theroycrafting like it does so was just wondering if there had been a ruling on this.

The feature does exactly what it says it does. You can take an additional action on your turn. People may be referring to this as a "bonus" action in common speech, but it's not what the rules would call a bonus action.

Why they tried to call it "an action" instead of "a standard action," when other kinds of actions exist, is beyond me. But seconded. Action Surge doesn't give you a second turn, just another use of whatever you can do on a (standard) action.

FYI It has been clarified by Jeremy Crawford that Action Surge doesn't grant an aditional bonus action http://thesageadvice.wordpress.com/2014/11/27/action-surge-grants-one-action/#respond

So does that mean that a two-weapon fighter can't gain a second attack with his second weapon? I mean a fighter getting 6 attacks in one round by level 5 is crazy, but its only one attack more than it normally would be if there is no bonus action added. I believe the intent was for two-weapon fighters to gain a second attack. It just makes sense. Especially since it "... one additional action on top of your regular action and a possible bonus action." If it was meant to be seperate, wouldn't it state or?

Edit* - I did not realize who Jeremy Crawford was. I take my statement back about how it is read. I still keep my opinion that it should grant a bonus action as well. At least for the purpose of two-weapon fighting.

Sorry SkullKingX, you are wrong. Action surge allows you to gain one additional Action. TWF uses your bonus action. A 5th level fighter using TWF and action surge gains a maximum of 5 attacks/round as follows:

  • Attack Action: One attack plus one additional attack from the extra attacks feature.
  • Bonus Action: One attack with your second weapon. You do not add your ability modifier to the damage with your secondary weapon unless you have the two weapon fighting fighting style.
  • Action Surge - Attack Action: Gain a second action. Spend it to take a second Attack Action, granting you two additional attacks.

Thanks all for explaining. I was also confused by the last part of the description:

On your turn, you can take one additional action on top of your regular action and a possible bonus action.

Wouldn't it have been more clear if the last part had been omitted?
