Action surge and bonus actions

Would a fighter taking an action surge be allowed to take more than one bonus action?

Action Surge reads:

 

"Starting at 2nd level, you can push yourself beyond your limits for a moment. On your turn, you can take one additional action on top of your regular action and a possible bonus action."

 

A possible interpretation of the second sentence could lead someone to believeing they could take a second bonus action.  For example, a fighter using two light weapons.

1.  Action: Attack with main weapon

2.  Bounus action: attack with off-hand weapon

3.  Use an action surge to gain another action:

4.  Action: Attack with main weapon

5.  Bounus action: attack with off-hand weapon

The specific wording, emphasis mine:

 

On your turn, you can take one additional action on top of your regular action and a possible bonus action.

 

i.e.:  1 action + (1 action + 1 bonus)  =  2 actions + 1 bonus

 

This means when you use Action Surge, you have 3 total actions, 2 "actions" and a "bonus action."  Action Surge does not grant another "bonus action", just another "action."

 

So no, I don't think you can off-hand attack twice with Action Surge.  You can attack with main weapon, then (bonus) off-hand attack, then choose to attack again (with either weapon, as your main/offhand status was resolved for the previous two actions).

 

(If there were a comma in the rules text after "regular action," I would be inclined to agree that Action Surge grants an action and a bonus action:

 

On your turn, you can take one additional action on top of your regular action, and (you may take) a possible bonus action.)

Thanks for the feedback.  I also interpret it the same way.  I am trying to convince someone who believes that action surge also grants a second bonus action.

What about if a fighter has 2 attacks per action?   Does action surge give him 4 attacks?

 

If duel wielding fighter with 2 attacks per action can make 2 attacks+ bonus attack with off-hand weapon...then action surge to make 2 more attacks?  (total of 5 attacks)

 

What do you all think?
