Advantage rule for higher ground, Q.

Hi all, couple of questions on advantage rulings:

i) It it correct to allow advantage for a PC or opponent that attacks from higher ground (be it off a table, a rooftop)?

ii) Should a PC/NPC receive advantage for attacking from a mount?

iii) If attacking from a higher position is what is required to provide advantage, why dont larger creatures that have an (often very significant) height advantage on their target have advantage by default? I don't mean to be disingenuous, every way I look at this it seems silly that someone striking down on someone has advantage but a giant that's 30 feet taller than it's opponent doesn't.

The Rules as Written don’t grant advantage for attacking from higher ground.

The DM does have discretion to grant advantage or disadvantage on attacks for whatever reason he likes, but not all players would be willing to put up with all reasons.

There will probably be some optional advanced combat rules when the Dungeon Master’s Guide is released. I would be willing to bet that those will not grant advantage for attacking from a mount or for being a giant.

I think granting cover and concealment more often to the combatants on the high ground and granting cover and concealment less often to the combatants on the low ground is a more reasonable bonus than advantage.

It's a DM's call .I'd probably go with a flat +1 or +2 bonus for attacking from horseback or from high ground, depending on the situation. I think Adv is too strong a bonus.

The Mounted Combat feat does explicitly give advantage to an attacker mounted on a creature at least one size category larger than the attacker's target.

Other than that, size and high ground aren't explicitly governed in the PHB or basic rules.  It's certainly within reason for a DM to assign advantage in some situations, but giving advantage for height or size frequently may be a bit excessive.

If you wanted it to be more of a well-established technique in your home game (as opposed to a potentially abusable ad-hoc ruling), I could easily see it being added as a new 'Combat Mastery' Fighter option, actually.  Just offhand, i'd probably restrict it to only be usable with non-light melee weapons and a minimum of 3 feet rasied elevation or the like.
