The alarm spell notes that the caster can "designate creatures that won't set off the alarm". However, what does this mean? Does it mean individuals ("I designate Joe and Alice")? Or does it mean creature types ("I designate rats, beetles and dogs"), or some combination of them? Makes a huge difference to the usefulness of the spell.

The spell is intended to be useful. As a DM, I'll assume that you exclude your party members, horses, mules, familiars, animal companions, etc. along with normal insects and harmless animals within the area such that the spell doesn't immediately go off because some fly or mouse enters yoru camp.

Hmm...  how far can you go with the designation?

"Anyone who is not evil"

"Anyone who would help our cause."

"Anyone who would not make a good king"

"Anyone who isn't relevent to the plot".
