After cutting off their feet they could take a long rest to heal up, but what happens to their old feet that are still in the boots? Do the player's old feet stay in the boots until a remove curse it cast on the boots?
I'm thinking that the curse is on the player once he put the boots on, so even with the boots physically removed he'd still start dancing during combat. |

Probably not worth it...
In fact the curse may well prevent the character cutting off their own feet in the first place - 'you try to make the first incision, but the knife flies out of your hand!'. Sounds like a bonus, in your case! |

But I do like the idea of the boots not allowing a person to cut off their feet. |

Someone with a cursed Berzerker Axe will not let the axe be out of their reach, but even if you steal it from him while he is sleeping he will attack with disadvantage with any weapon besides the axe.
What got me thinking about regrowing feet in 5E is that by default there is no cripling effects in the rules. I guess if a player wanted to intentionally cripple themselves the DM would have to use optional rules or create a house rule. This came up in my campaign with a ring and not boots, so I ruled that the finger did not grow back, but I also had no in game penalty for being without a finger. Looking back I should have kept the curse on the player as well as leave them without a finger. |

If a character has a cursed ring, they will not take it off voluntarily. If the ring is removed involuntarily (they are unconscious or dominated, for example) then they are still cursed. If someone else puts on the ring then there are now two cursed people, who are probably fighting over who gets possession of the ring!
The idea of allowing cursed boots to be, ummm, "forcibly" removed sounds very dramatic, however. I think I'll allow it for one or two items. |
