Is that okay? |

| #6thewokSep 19, 2014 16:26:56 | As OnceMore and StuleBrown said, RAW says that once you select a cantrip, it's yours forever. And, it makes sense. These are spells that are supposed to be so rote that you could never forget them.
If you wanted to, however, you could allow a caster to swap cantrips. I wouldn't do it on an extended rest, as that just makes it too easy. I'd sooner have it be at a level-up and downtime (such that you have time to practice the new spell enough to build up that muscle memory and such). Of course, if your player is just totally unhappy with his spell selections, then, by all means, just retcon it and have him or her rechoose cantrips. After all, reading and actually doing can be very different.
Some people have also talked about a house rule where Wizards can scribe cantrips into their spellbooks and then swap them out periodically. You might check into that, too. |

| #9TimboramaSep 22, 2014 7:36:45 | I would allow changing Cantrips once per level in place of changing a spell known (if they have that feature). As for prepared casters like Wizards and Druids? I'd probably let them unlearn and then re-learn one when they gain a new cantrip.
Though I always let a person change basically every aspect of their character after that character's first game (feats, spells known, stuff like that). My only stipulation is they have to tell me first (what they changed and what's in its place). I will always say yes, though, unless they used some special mechanic to prevent a TPK or try to trade in an item that turned the tide of battle or something. This prevents players from thinking, "oh man, Light is SO USEFUL!" And then going into a dungeon and not using it once, so they can change it out before the next session for something they think is more practical/useful.
I would not allow them to change Cantrips all willy-nilly (after a short rest, long rest, week's rest, whatever). That's the thing with Cantrips. You can cast them as much as you want, but you can only learn a few... |
| #10JamwesSep 22, 2014 11:05:45 | I would allow cantrips to be swapped if a new book with new cantrips are released. In general, I allow redoing characters when new material comes out, as long as the player sticks to their original character concept.
Other than that, I would have to be swayed by the player to allow it. They would have to have a very good reason to want a change. Perhaps if the selected cantrip didn't work the way they thought it did or if it never comes up. I'd probably have them go on a quest to change it out. |
