I'm battling a technicality.  Are domain spell bonus spells or just extra ones on your list  you can memorize for the day?

I can't find out where it is defined in the PHB either way.

Got a reference for that?  I need to point it out to a player?

"Once you gain a domain spell, you always
have it prepared, and it doesn’t count against the
number of spells you can prepare each day."

As Wayside quoted, domain spells has nothing to do with spell slots, just spell prepared .

I see it says that it is "..ALWAYS PREPARED."  Does that mean unlimited casting per day?  (p.58 "Domain Spells"

"To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher." (pg.58 Preparing and Casting Spells)

You can cast any prepared spells as many times per day as you have the spell slots to do so.  If you have 2 spell slots and 3 prepared spells you can cast the same prepared spell 2 times.  However once you have done so you cannot cast more spells since you do not have unexpended spell slots.

Under "Domain Spells" it says, "..it doesn't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.." and that bit about "always prepared" is what is giving my player fits.

This isn't clear at all.  It basically says infinite casting and always ready.

Here is a video explaining How Spell Slots Works in Dungeons & Dragons (5E) using a revolver analogy;

Once you gain a domain spell, you always have it prepared, and it doesn’t count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.
