| #1AdrianLPJan 20, 2015 12:36:19 | I've played a lot of AD&D 2nd edition through 3rd edition (far too much in fact) a few sessions of 4th edition, but only recently learned about 5th edition. I don't own the books yet, and have had little opportunity to read them.
I understand that classes no longer get an attack bonus based upon their level. Is this correct? Whatever mechanism replaces this, does it make the game feel like there is any measurable skill progression (ignoring increased bonuses from attributes and magical items)?
A 20th level fighter, for example, *should* be just about unbeatable by a 1st level fighter using the same gear. For a real world example see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgKg0Hc7YIA (3 Olympian fencing masters VS 50 opponents). In pure skill (ignoring bonuses from attributes and magical items) and all else being equal the person with much higher experience should be magnitudes better than the person with little experience.
Unrelated, I've read about the changes to the wizard's vancian magic system (can we still call it vancian?), and it sounds really amazing! I *love* mages. Reading about Rasitlin Majere as a teen got me hooked on D&D and reading in general. I always felt low-level mages in editions previous to 4th to be fairly useless in combat until they could have a larger pool of memorized spells. |

Go get the basic game here.
As for a 20th level fighter vs. a 1st level fighter: the 1st level fighter will be able to hit the 20th level fighter, but won't deal enough damage to be of any concern (2d6+5 tops vs. well over 100 hit points), but the 20th level fighter is very likely to knock the 1st level fighter out with a single attack that hits, and happens to get 4 (or more, depending on fighting style and whether he feels like using any limited use class features) chance to hit in a round.
To summarize, a 1-v-1 fight between the two would be no contest. |

Bounded Accuracy is a design goal, wherein the Dev's wanted to make low-level opponents a relevant challenge at higher levels, simply by increasing their numbers. They also wanted to reduce the disparity between proficient and non-proficient characters as the game has historically had an issue with encounter design due to said disparity - with an encounter being too easy for some characters, and too difficult for others.
5E has achieved this goal for the most part. A 20th level character can still easily kill a 1st level character. The ease with which they do so is not tied directly to their numerical bonuses, but rather to their increased hit points, class features, and other abilities.
Meanwhile, a single 1st level character is not a threat to said character - but 20 1st level characters can be, due to overwhelming numbers. This is relevant even in the real world, as even masters can be overwhelmed with force of numbers.... Cinema exaggerates how many opponents a master can take on simultaneously. This is especially true once you remember that 1st level characters are not complete novices. They are probably equivalent to yellow or orange belt themselves (to use Karate as an example). |
| #4melloredJan 20, 2015 12:53:19 | Is renamed proficency. It's not based on class level, but overall level. Goes from +2 to +6 And applies to skills, spell DC's, and saving throws as well. (the ones your proficent in).
and yes a level 20 fighter would get 4 attacks, has plenty of HP, all the other features, like increased crits, second wind, action surge, extra feats, ect... So yes, a level 20 fighter is unbeatble by a level 1 fighter. Not unhittable, but unbeatable.
They can beat 50 sword wielding pesants, but i'm not sure if they can beat 50 other fighter...
i'm kinda curious now. |
