Do mounts (or animal pets) require proficiency in barding to avoid having disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks and saving throws?

The horse in the DM basic rules make no mention of being proficient with barding, so does that mean that as soon as barding is slapped on the horse it is disadvantaged against a lot of things?

Don't be silly, you can't mount your bard.

What about mounting a druid? The one who shapeshifted in a horse?

Hmm, good question!

It does seem somewhat missed from the rules.

It may be in the DMG or MM of course.

Given they don't even mention how it's possible to train your mount if DMing and it came up, I'd probably be nice and assume that Barding is easy enough for animals to wear that prof. is not needed.

If I wanted to be more exacting, I'd presume:

Warhorses are proficient in all types of Barding.

Riding Horses are proficient in at least light, and probably medium.

Other mounts are proficient in light unless they're undomesticated.

Barring further clarification I would say that since there are no rules for animals having proficiency, there is no proficiency penalty for wearing any kind of armor.

Weight could become an issue and if you tell me that your hawk familiar is wearing full plate barding about the only way it's going to fly is with the help of a catapult.

Ok, so it's been almost a year.
Do we have any official clarification?

I have someone who wants to ride a Deinonychus in Raptor Armor as a halfling ranger.

He wants to have the raptor wearing armor... ARMOR... and use a lance to make his attacks, until enemies are within 5 ft, then he wants to have the raptor do all the work.

Help?

There is no official clarification I know of, so this is up to the DM.

Personally I'd say mounts require special training to use armor proficiently. I'd say warhorses come with that training, other animals must trained. I'd use the same training rules that characters use to learn languages etc. But unless you feel your player is being abusive, I'd let him find/buy a trained dino. (This would of course count as an appropriately valuable treasure item.)
