I just wonder what the next steps are, after we finish our starter set story.
And what will happen when the 3 core books are out.. Am I 'forced' too own the 3 books if I wanna run any official released stories? Or are the 3 books for creating your own stories? (This question mainly looks at the monster manual and dungeon master guide books)
I guess the main question is : Can I buy official books, now and in the future, with only the basic rules and play them ? As DM and as PC.
Thanks a bunch, |

You will be terrible at first, but don't worry! Everyone's awful their first time. But you'll learn, and you'll grow. |

You don't need to buy anything at all. However, I second Novacat's statement above; it's more fun to create your own stories and adventures, and for that the three core rulebooks will be helpful. Still not necessary - all the rules you need to play the game are in the free PDFs - but helpful. |

You also could get the Hoard of the Dragon Queen, and run it as written -- it takes place on the Sword Coast like the Starter Set does, and one of its scenarios takes place in the Mere of Dead Men which is right next to Phandalin. Or you could modify it slightly--perhaps Phandalin is the town in the first chapter attacked by a dragon. Or you could just take a scenario out and run it by itself.
As the DM, you can do whatever you want. You don't need to feel like you have to run something by the book.
By the way, two of the three core books (the player's handbook and the monster manual) are out. You don't need them -- there are a lot of monsters in the free core rules. They will be helpful though, particularly the monster manual, if you come up with you own scenarios. Ask your players where their characters want to go or do next. If you aren't sure how to deal with it, post in the DM forum and lots of helpful people will be there with ideas. |
