#1 Valorith Nov 07, 2014 19:27:49	During a game we had an issue where a player casted Blade Barrier(PHB Page 67).  The Issue is whether or not the Ongoing damage deals its damage the turn the creature gets the effect if it gets the effect during the start of its turn.
#2 Novacat Nov 07, 2014 19:33:16	There are two times when a Blade Barrier might deal damage: at the start of a creature's turn if it starts in the area, or during a creature's turn if it enters the area for the first time that turn.   So the Blade Barrier does not do any damage immediately when it's cast.
#3 Valorith Nov 07, 2014 19:48:35	That is not what I meant, Turn order:   Player:       Casts Blade barrier on enemy square.   Enemy:      Start in barrier,      Takes base damage and gains ongoing      takes turn actions   This is the question, does enemy take ongoing damage right then when it gets the ongoing since it is still the start of the turn or does it take damage next turn failing a saving throw of course?
#4 Novacat Nov 07, 2014 19:58:33	There is no ongoing damage associated with Blade Barrier.   In fact, I'm pretty sure "ongoing damage" isn't a thing in 5E.

#6 paulstrait Nov 09, 2014 19:21:13	In 4e, "when a creature is subjected to ongoing damage, it does not take the damage right away," but, instead, takes the "damage on consecutive turns after the initial attack" (Compendium p. 224).  If you want to discuss this further we should take it to the 4e forums, but I figured better not to turn you away without an answer.
