Blade Pact and Sentient/Artifact Weapons

"You can transform one magic weapon into your pact weapon by performing a special ritual while you hold the weapon. You perform the ritual over the course of 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. You can then dismiss the weapon, shunting it into an extradimensional space, and it appears whenever you create your pact weapon thereafter. You can't affect an artifact or a sentient weapon this way."

I'm wondering if the part that I made bold refers ONLY to the dismissal/reappearance of the weapon, or to the entire paragraph. Please let me know! If it means the entire paragraph, then blade pact warlocks really get the shaft with top tier weapons.

I have read it to mean that a Warlock cannot transform a sentient or artifact weapon into a pact weapon at all.

I don't see this as a major failing, as artifact and sentient weapons are not usually intended as power bumps for players but rather plot devices.  Preventing a Warlock from subverting the plot device seems reasonable.

Yeah, you cannot "bond" with an artifact or sentient weapon. That seems pretty clear. Their magic>Yours

You can attune with the weapon like any other character, but you can't use it as your pact weapon, unless the weapon's description specifically says so (because specific beats general), and to the best of my knowledge, we haven't seen any that do.

Id say its up to the DM and how it fits in the story. I´d say that if the artifact allows it to work. Otherwise it´d be pretty lame to have a super duper artifact that is just worse than your other weapon, with no double attack being allowed and such.

For example, in my current campaign the patron of my Warlock is the Lady of the Lake, and the blade I summon is actually a spirit of sorts of Excalibur. Eventually that will be my pact weapon, but there is a catch: I can only summon a longsword.

Honestly, I do not see how turning it into a pact weapon should be that impossible. Making it your pact weapon is just attunement+.

Of course, do keep in mind that the artifact can be all like ´kay done now´ and then the bond is just broken.

I think this is meant because sentient/artifact level weapons have a tendency to "disappear" after the story is over. (for plot reasons it was added temporarily but not wanting to permanently add to the characters power level).  Once a warlock selects a weapon as his pact weapon, he can never lose it and can summon it back at any time, without this restriction it would make the DM’s job harder.

Mournblade does not appreciate being treated like the martial equivalent of a booty call.
