Hi!

My friends and I started plating 5e the other day (been playing D&D for years) and I decided to make a Fighter.

The thing we got stuck at, and was hoping you guys could help with, is the Fighter's lvl 1 ability Second Wind.

Second Wind
You have a limited well of stamina that you can draw on
to protect yourself from harm. On your turn, you can use
a bonus action to regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your
fighter level.

Sure, this sound quite awesome but the problem is that you need a bonus action to use it, and according to the rules you must use a action that grants you a bonus action and you do not start with any actions that gives you bonus actions. So does that mean that you at lvl 1 get a useless ability? Because that seems really crappy :P

And the same seems to go for the Cleric's Healing Word by the way.

It means you now have a bonus action you can take in Second Wind, on top of your normal action.
