But if your DM is a stickler, then I agree that taking the arcane focus and using it as an improvised quarterstaff is the best option.

The rules lawyers being so incredibly pedantic and petty about this are going to be proven wrong, I guarantee it.   Use the arcane focus as a regular quarterstaff. I'm willing to bet that 90% of DM's won't have a problem with it simply because they're not dicks like most of the people arguing these rules.
