Can a wizard put himself to sleep?

If a wizard is within the AoE of his own sleep spell, and he has low enough HP, will he fall asleep as well?

Basic Rules, Page 80: If a spell targets a creature of your choice, you can choose yourself, unless the creature must be hostile or specifically a creature other than you. If you are in the area of effect of a spell you cast, you can target yourself.

 

Since the wizard doesn't have any choice about who gets targetted by sleep, he can be a target.

Hopefully, a companion with enough hit points to not be affected will spend an action to wake the sleeping wizard so he can continue acting in the combat.
