In Older Editions of D&D, a spell caster who reached their maximum number of known spells could bypass that maximum by spending months 'researching' the spell as if it were a new spell. Additionally, if they actually created a new spell, spending the normal 9-25+ weeks of spell research required with their expensive labs and libraries, they could add the new spell they created to their list of known spells, even if it bypassed their maximum allowed. The rules were very specific - this was the only way, and the traditional way to improve the maximum number of known spells.
I would like to know, since in 5th edition, Wizards don't apparently have any maximum, and Sorcerers appear to cap at around 15 known spells, but are allowed to research spells according to the DMG (it names Sorcerers in the research section)...

However, both Mike Mearls and Jeremy Crawford (the chief guys behind 5th Edition) respond to questions in Twitter. You will probably have better luck there. |
| #3eyriekingSep 28, 2015 20:37:39 | the creating a spell section is under the dms workshop. that part is usually intended to help a dm to create a new spell, not a PC. Also, none of those are official rules, so there is nothing to rule on. |

| #6shintashiSep 29, 2015 11:52:29 | ah. if DMs are the only way to research spells in 5th edition and it is beyond the power of PC spell casters, then I wish nothing further to do with 5th edition. I will be sure to tell all of my friends that 5th edition D&D has this flaw, and they should seek to spend their RPG funds elsewhere. Thank you for that relevation. |
