Can spells be cast with advantage or at a disadvantage?

When a spell is cast using an attack roll, does advantage or disadvanttage apply in any circumstances? Or is advantage and disadvantage not applicable to spell casting?

Spells that use attack rolls can use advantage/disadvantage. Saves work on another system of Advantage and Disadvantage.

 

So guiding bolt would let a ray of frost get advantage if the guiding bolt came first.

Yes, spells that have attack rolls can use advantage or disadvantage.

Saving throws against spells can also have advantage or disadvantage.

 

Examples from the Basic Rules:

 

Shocking grasp - If the wizard casts the spell to attack a target wearing metal armor, the wizard's attack roll gets advantage.

 

Sunburst- If the wizard uses this spell against certain kinds of monsters (such as undead), they make their saving throws with disadvantage.

 

Another example:

 

A wizard casts invisibility and next turn, while invisible, casts a fire bolt.  The fire bolt attack roll will have advantage if the victim cannot see the wizard.
